Hi,
Here's the back story. I bought this 97 XP last year and paid someone to swap out the engine. When I got it back, i had some starting issue - mainly it won't start. So I stored it away for the winter. This week, I had replaced all of the grey fuel lines. I also open the carb to see if there is anything standing out. What I found was some rust inside the carbs around the magnet. So what do you think I should do?

Jon

Just clean the carbs, that is probably where you had starting issues. Make sure you take out the jets and clean them too. Common problem with those older models. Do a pop off test on them too to make sure the needles and seats are good.

I have seen some pretty nasty carbs get saved on this forum. Post a couple of pictures so the guys can see what your talking about. I am not a carb guy, I hate working on them. Here is a set of mine that DrHonda from the forum saved for me.

All I can do is bow with reverence to Dr Honda. That looks like toast to the rest of us but he sees the rejuvenation potential and brings it back to a fulfilling life of gas atomizing fun.

 I love that one. I will tell you, the carbs run great and were adjusted perfectly, I was a little disappointed with the idle, it was at 1510 and not 1500. :)

Wow 1510 huh...I think you should ask for a discount on your next service. It might take all day to adjust out that last 10 rpms!

Here's one of the picture with some rust inside:

So after spending a couple of hours between finding the right tools and cleaning all of the pieces, both carbs are now partially back. I tried to clean almost all of the rust off as i can. Here's a my next questions:
1. How do I install the Low and High Speed screws? How many turns is enough?
2. What is the PSi that I should be expecting with the popoff test?

Thanks.

That's rust.

Basically... there was some water in the fuel... and when it sat all winter... the little plug rusted, and leaked down.

Just clean it... and they should be fine.

1) Low: 1-3/4 High: 0

2) 28-48 PSI

you guys are nuts. I've tossed carbs that looked better than that.

Doc if you want 'em just pay shipping next time I'm ready to toss some 951 carbs, you can have 'em.

Ain't No One Got Time Fo Dat!

Thanks for the response. I was able to run the popup tests and I see bubbles coming around the needle housing. So I removed the o rings and one has some cracks on it, the other is fine. I tried to replace the o rings with the ones from the local hardware store but the seats would not go down all the way.
1. Are there any vendors selling the OEM o rings that would fit the housing?
2. Can I apply some sealants around the o rings to stop the leaks?

Thanks again.

Hi again,
so I was able to score a couple of o rings from a buddy who's a mechanic. I put everything back together with full charged battery and new spark plugs. Here's my new issue: it won't start with the throttle opened. But it will start with the choke opened and it screamed really high rpm - and when I gave it gas, the engine will shut off. I don't have a digital tach so i can't tell what rpm it's running - I ordered one from ebay so it should be here next week. So did I missed a cable or something?

thanks.

Out of water it should rev at 3000 rpm.
If you think it is excessive then try turning yor idle screw down a bit.
The "running away" sounds like an air leak. Are the carb base gaskets in good shape and installed properly. Sometimes they will slide around while trying to bolt the carbs down.

I usually put a few drops of super glue on the carb base gaskets and attach them to the intake so they are much easier to install and don't slide around and drop into the hull during installation

The carb gaskets are actually glues onto the intake - from the previous owner. I might take the carb off and put a gasket sealand just to make sure.
1. Is there a way to test for leakage with the carb installed in the engine?
