Ride Plate Removal

Can anyone help me out with how to remove the ride plate on my 1997 spx? i removed the intake grate and the 6 flat head screws from the ride plate but i cant get it to budge. I had a pry bar between the hull and the ride plate but it doesnt move. Is there glue or sylicone holding it on? And is there any easy way to get the plate off?

Yes. The pump is off too. But the plate is stuck to the hull.
Are they really that siliconed on?

The vertical part of the shoe has a boxed X pattern and also the hoop is siliconed too.
 
Ok. Guess ill get a bigger pry bar and see if i can get it to move any further. I got the back 2 sides lose but the rest wont move. Im just afraid of breaking it
 
Cut around the hoop with a razor blade. Like one of those mini box cutters, narrow blade like a 1/2" wide. You can probably extend it and get in the sides too.
 
Ya. It is cold today. And only getting colder. But i have the luxury of a heated garage. Never have to winterize any of the toys.
 
Yes. There is a generator. But the house and garage are both heated by wood. And the barn has radiant floor heat and heavy insulation. It never gets below 50 in there. That also has a small generator to keep the boiler running and the circulating pumps going.
 
are power outages a real concern up north ?
I had one in FL (hurricane) for 4 days, and past that I think my longest outage since 1987 has been about 2 hours when lightening hit a transformer.
 
That would be nice. Plus you get to ride almost all year round. The power only goes out when it snows really bad or high winds. Otherwise its pretty good but it doesnt hurt to have backups.
 
I'm planning on a 80,000 BTU propane unit for my garage, but still plan to winterize. Not to get off topic, but that's a nice setup.

Even 50-60 isn't a 90+ degree day. I just did some audio work on my GSX and it was much hard to work on even after I move it to the house garage at 55.

The FSM says to use a bottle jack...
 
Yup use a bottle jack, make sure to use a small chunk of 2x6 up top to keep from stressing the hull.

Go very slow...get some pressure on it and let the glue start to peel a bit before pumping again.

Why are you taking it off?
 
Im taking it off to do the 3" pump extension. I wanted more room to replace the 4 studs in the hull with longer ones.
 
Oh man...forget that. You dont want to take it off for any reason except to replace or if the sealant pulls loose and cavitates. It might be too late though.


On the studs...put two nuts on the stud and tighten them against each other super tight. Then turn the inner nut and it should come right out. Stubborn ones hit with a little heat. Revere procedure to install.
 
Its not too late. I didnt get to do any more work on it. I know how to do the 2 nuts trick but i wanted more room to get the wrench in there to turn the inner nut. But ill give it a shot as is.
 
I did a ride plate (cracked) on a 99 GTX, it wasn't fun, but I did it in my parent's garage when I was like 17 lol.
 
I promise you its NOT worth it. chit it will take you an hour to scrape all the old glue off, and a can of sealant to reinstall.
 
Alright. Its staying on. lol. Dont want to go though extra work if I dont have to. Thanks everyone for all of the input.

yes, the two nut is a neat little trick, I learned that a couple weeks ago from Chuck when trying to remove the long 951 case studs that were stuck in pretty dam solid, I love learning little mechanic tricks like that. I''ve been pushing paperwork around all day at my office since I was 20, so I never learned all this neat chit.
 
You could use a stud installer/remover and extension if you really want more room to turn the wrench, you can get them on loan from the various autoparts stores
 
The stud tool I have kinda goobers up the threads....I just use it to clean up cases and stuff for scrap.
