RFI vs DI vs Carb

Which is better and why?

I'm somewhat partial to RFI due to me having one but just wanted to hear the opinion of the seadoo crowd due to its aquatic application.

Things to consider:
power (torque/take off)
efficiency (fuel burning effectiveness)
cost (parts/maintenance)

I like carbs for the simplicity... but the easy starting on the DI is neat... but the RFI seems to be the best of the DI vs RFI...

After reading about the pros/cons of the 3 setups. I'm sticking with carbs... but that's just me

For the home mechanic... carbs are the easiest to deal with. (my preference)

The Di system is the most fuel efficient, because it's the only one that can run lean, and not melt the piston crown, since it can introduce the fuel late in the combustion cycle.

RFI is a little tougher than the Di system... and is less complex.

Both the RFI and Di system can get crazy expensive to fix.


I like fuel injection... but not on a +10 year old jet ski.

the injected ones seem to start easier when cold, but a warm 951 carb starts almost instantly... for the parts / price / troubleshooting... even another 5 MPH top end to me... wouldn't be worth it... (not that either of my carb 951s is slow)...

Your compression could be low. (Engine getting a little tired)

I have the same year and model. Just replaced the block with new one. I have a similar problem. It starts only with the throttle full open and then doesn't want to run under 3000 RPM or less for very long or it will die. You can restart and run fast to clear it out, seems to be flooding. This is the problem with fuel injection. It is hard to diagnose the problem. Maybe there is a problem with the fuel pump or the controller, but it is obviously getting enough fuel.

Hi All

Well I have only owned the RFI and love it. I have had no problems relating to the fuel injection or electronics.
Some friends have carb jetski's and the amount of time they battle with it, I pass. If we riding dams up country or in the sea they seem to be fiddling with their adjustments. No clue why. Mine drag her into the water hit the start and off I am gone.

So yes I like the RFI.
