So I bought a 2001 GTX DI with 165 hours from an old man who owned it since it was new. He had a guy in the neighborhood perform maintenance on it. Both men were present when I bought it. They said the only things they did were regular maintenance.
5 hours into riding it, it died on me. No I didnt check compression when I bought it. Stupid me. Learned my lesson.
Compression was 70psi on mag and 125 on pto.
Used a bore scope through the spark plug hole and saw a chunk of the piston was missing.
So I took it out of hull, put it on the bench and started tearing it apart.
**The cylinder head had pitting in both domes, but only my mag piston had pitting. The pto piston looked perfect. Will come back to this later.**
I wasn't sure if the head would need to be cleaned up or not, but I didn't want to do it. Later found out the head wasn't too bad and could be cleaned up easily.
So I scanned ebay for prices on cylinder heads when I realized.....
THERES A 2002 CYLINDER HEAD ON MY 2001 947!
I reached out to the previous owner and his "mechanic". They deny ever working on the engine themselves or having any engine work done. So then why is there a 2002 cylinder head on this engine, with shrapnel marks on the pto dome when my pto piston is smooth as a baby's a**....
Anybody ever seen this? I know the hours are kinda high for a 947 DI but is this ultimately what caused my engine to go? Should I switch to a 2001 head?
My assumption is that it wasn't winterized properly and cracked the head, so they ordered the cheaper/more available 2002 head from ebay. (This head previously being on a ski that blew due to a PTO side failure) Slapped it on and are denying doing it. After it blew up, both plugs were very oily and there was traces of water in the crank case.
