Ok, sorry to beat a dead horse, but I've searched and read just about every thread I can find on mileage, MPG, Range, etc. on these boats.

I'd like to go to Lake Powell this summer and am working on some logistics, so if any of you guys have semi - "officially" checked your mileage or range can you please share your results.

Format something like this:

Boat:
1998 Seadoo Challenger

Motor (s):
787 X 2

Gallons used:
?

Miles or knots:
?

WAG best economy cruising RPMS:
5000 ???

I plan on doing some testing and will post my results when available. WAG's in general are acceptable as well. Ideally, I'd like to be able to milk about 100 miles out of my 40 gallon tank if possible....

WAG - Wild Azz Guess

100 miles? :lols: My boat is close to what you are looking at. 787 x 2 but in a 16 ft boat. i can easily go through 40 gallons in less than 50 miles. Of course that is at WOT. Cruising speed of about 60% throttle and it will last much longer.

The Challenger 1800 with twin 787's is rated at 25 gallons per hour at WOT. I'm not sure what the optimum cruising RPM is

So doing some calculations... the max drive time you would get at WOT is 1 hour 36 minutes. Since the max speed on that boat is about 50 mph, the total distance you could go at WOT is 80 miles

That calculation is for worst case scenario, as cruising at a lower RPM would be more fuel efficient... but i bet you could get 100 miles out of a tank. Wait until someone comes back with the fuel efficient GPH rating before being sure though.

Normally... somewhere around 75% power is the best speed/distance/fuel point. Generally, you will use half the fuel, with only a 20% drop in speed. (just a generalization)

Something else to remember... if you are fighting a current... it will take more fuel to cover the same distance.

Thanks guys...

So if max RPM is 7200 (?)......

5400 RPM would likely be most efficient ?

I've seen a lot of data on fuel consumption at WOT, but trying to figure out max cruising range.....

That's about right.

When I'm out on the Sportster... I will get it up to speed, and then, pull the throttle back to 5500 to 5600 RPM. There is a minimal speed drop, but I can ride around all day on a tank of fuel. If I held it open, I would only have about 2.2 Hr's of fuel.

It's not exacting data... but it's real world runin'.

Anyone have any newer data on range? I'm trying to figure if I have enough capacity to run 60 miles out, and then back on the same tank of gas.

You will burn 12.6 g/hr full throttle. Probably about 8~9 gal/hr at 75%. AND... you have a 27g tank. SOoooooo..... You are looking about 120~130 total range. (best) This depends on water current, and weight in the boat...... so... I would say to bring some extra fuel.

Nothing really much too add as all info u need has been posted ... I just get sick every time this subject comes up!

$4 x 40 gallons = 160
ramp fee = 15
gas for car = 30
food/drinks = 40
oil = 30
One nice day on the water :patriot:

What does a gallon go for in Canada?

Just travelled to northern ontario this past weekend cheapest i filled was $1.29 per litre which would be $4.88 a gallon. Yup pretty much all i gotta say about that.

thats why I try not to eat when I go out....
one piece of dry white toast and thats it !!!

seriously, i just try not to add up the cost of fun, its too expensive that way !
in general i'm probably spending a little bit more than a dollar a mile when on the water.
it doesn't even occur to me when the wind is blowing in my face.

ps , that 120 mile trip can't be made with that boat, period. That trip requires extra fuel.

even if it could be made, extra fuel should be taken, never cut it close.

Anyone ever tried converting the 787 over to CNG? From what I have read its made allot simpler on the 2 stroke since the oil injection system is already in place. With CNG running around $1.30 as compared to 100% 87 running around $3.45, might be a viable option and definitely cleaner.

That would be a neat conversion. Would the HP stay the same?

We need to get Guyph in Oz on this project right away.

Unfortunately with cng your range would be cut by somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3. The benefits of CNG are its cheap, the cons, you don't get anywhere close to the mileage of conventional gasoline and it takes forever to fill. Not sure the 787 has the compression for cng as well.

I don't know about CNG. I've been working on an alternative solution. The flux capacitor. It's almost ready.
