Prop Came loose

Has anyone seen a prop just come loose randomly... I don't think it was taken off any time recently, My best guess Was it was running on the trailer for about 20 minutes and it must have vibrated loose then I took it out and it ran fine for about 4 miles then on the way back it kept getting slower and slower till I let off and it shut off and almost sank. I got the water out engine but just wondering Why it decide to come loose, I reinstalled the motor about 3 hours ago, put in back in the same spot so I think the engine is aligned really think hope it was from running on the trailer for so long is the case.

When you were running it in the trailer were yiu backed into the ramp or on a hose?

If on a hose there is a great chance you destroyed the shaft seal. This would allow PLENTY of water into the hull. If so, I can't believe it didn't sink to be honest.

Joe is right. You burned up a carbon seal. Out of the water even with a hose 1-2 min is about all you want to run it. Any more and you risk damaging the carbon seal, which is what your issue sounds like. That can allow enough water in to sink in a hurry when the motor is running.

On the trailer. I know about the carbon seal.. That's where it let all the water in and filled it up in no time as the prop wasn't holding it pressure against it anymore,

Do you think that sounds plausible, idling to long out of water enough to shake it loosed....
Just don't want it to happen again, and have to buy another prop or shaft because if messed up threads

Why would you need another shaft? Letting it run out of water shouldn't damage that at all. What it damages is the seal between the shaft and the hull called a carbon seal.

the carbon seal wasn't even touching the ring cause the prop was disconnected about a 1/4 gap

Ok you're confusing the carbon seal with the wear ring. Completely different parts. The carbon seal is where the driveshaft comes through the hull and the wear ring is the liner in the pump where the impeller spins. That gap should be way less than 1/4 so you probably need a new of those too but that's not what caused your initial problem.

No im not confusing it with the seat off looking at the carbon seal in the water before I knew the prop was off, when I gave it gas the drive shaft would slide forward because the prop wasn't connected anymore causing it to move forward under pressure causing the leak, Im not concerned with that seal as I have another if I need it. But before I install the new impeller shaft I was hopeing to have some reassurance that the prop came loose because it vibrated loose running out of water for too long

I'm with KK on this one.
Wear ring to impeller should be no more than the hick ness if a dime.
I'm pretty sure your carbon seal is destroyed. There is a chance the shaft was marred up as well.

You are to the point where you need to pull the shaft. Might a well replace the wear ring at the same time.

I doubt if it vibrated off....you probably destroyed the seal instead....maybe even the splines. Take the pump apart to inspect the impeller, seal, shaft, carbon ring, wear ring, etc

Joe, how much is "Hick ness if a dime"???? .....sorry could resist. :) :) :)

When you get a chance post some pictures of the actual damage to the impeller and driveshaft. That way we can better figure out what happened. I've never heard of a prop coming loose. I have heard of splines stripping causing all sorts of mess in the pump.
