I am looking at buying a 2003 XP DI, that is suppose to be in great working order. But the research I have done so far does not seem to make me think it would be a good bike. So what are the historical problems with this bike or more specifically this engine?

The DI skis are great when running but a PAIN in the ass when they aren't running right. Diagnosing and repair can be hard and costly.

I would never purchase a DI ski. Sorry to be so negative, just being honest.

When they are running well, all is wonderful.

When they née repair, life sucks.

Few really understand them well enough to help you, diagnostics is MUCH harder and parts are MUCH more expensive.

I have seen others part their DI skis out as they simply could not get the engine running properly.

Again, just my views from being on this forum.

With the new Spark ($5000-6000) thrown into the mix judging a fair price is difficult. So far I have not noticed a price reduction in 2-strokes, except for end of season pricing. But the Spark makes it a whole new ball game. Just guessing I would say $1500 to 2000 tops.

I wouldn't presume to tell you want to do, but if I lived in Calif., with all the environmental restrictions I would think about getting a Spark. There's a section on this forum you might want to check out the threads.

I have a feeling we are going to see the price of 2 strokes plummet ong with the older model 4 strokes.
I have already put my deposit down on a spark but also plan on scooping up a few 96 xps cheap cheap.

But, I 100% agree with Coastie on the DI skis

That's cool that is just the sort of info I was looking for. I want a great ski, not one I will have to spend a ton to keep running though.

There are many out there that love the ski. And like I said, when they are running well they are great. But a nightmare when there is an issue.

I have learned a ton here. There is no better site a far as I am concerned.

I have two larger 4-tec skis. I spent just over 20 grand on them. Absolutely live them and would recommend both models to anyone and not be worried about the suggestion at all.

I simply can't suggest the DI ski and not feel guilty doing so.

Now is the time to buy though. A handful here are selling there's to get cash to buy the new Spark for example.

As an entry level ski i think it is going to be an excellent ski for the money and it's intended use.

There are at least two issues(three actual in my mind), one is the increased amount of electronics involved with fuel injection, which has become a permanent fact of life for any ski. Eventually the harness connectors WILL corrode on any ski, presence of salt pulls the event forward.

Then, the 951 is a high performance 2 stroke near the edge of design limits, so by design it simply isn't going to last as long as most others. Especially if the scales are somehow tipped unfavorably by a particular event and there are various potential scenarios.

Third, my belief is direct injection simply isn't a friend in the battle of keeping a 2 stroke piston from overheating, which is a common root cause of failure.

XP DI is a great ski, has the hull of the decade, fast, efficient, handles great. DI motor is very reliable with normal maintenance and using the proper oil. Not really that complicated, mostly people that don't know what they are doing or don't understand them are the ones that say they are no good.
