I am going to pull my engine today, for a rebuild over the winter. The manual mentions pump removal. Is this required or can the engine be slid forward off the drive shaft?

Yes, I would remove the pump, it's a 20 minute job, really not a big deal, you need to remove it anyway to align the engine when you re-install it.

Make sure you remove the c-clip before you remove the pump, otherwise you'll be re-installing the pump.. :)

what is this c-clip? i'm having a hard time removing the rear drive shaft on my '99 XP and the manual is confusing in this area. so far i got the engine and jet pump off.

I'm not sure what he's talking about either, you don't need to remove the "C" clip part no. 53 to remove the pump, however you will need to remove the "C" clip to remove the drive shaft. Here's the part parrothd is talking about.

Revised:

If you have the pump off and the engine out you won't need to remove the "C" clip unless you are rebuilding the drive shaft, which is not a bad idea.
