So my 951 was going crazy a few months back.. beeping, starting with no key by itself and other crazy things.
So eventually i decided that it was the solenoid for the starter (jumping it started it fine)... meanwhile it sat since feb.. I got the new solenoid and installed it and it does nothing.. no beeps, no trim function or anything. I tested the wires with my multi meter and it leads me to the mpem. I unplugged the harness and reseated all three plugs... then all the sudden it beep beeps. like it was ready to start so i hit the button.. no go still nothing no trim no crank nothing but bilge pump priming.

upon futher inspection my harness plug number 2 is totaly green and corroded. I tried to clean it and it still wont do anything other than the two beeps.

what can i use to disolve the build up?
Does the vts go through the mpem? If not im thinking maybee a ground.

no blown fuses.

You could try some GRC contact cleaner, should be available at most auto parts stores. I'm not sure where you could find one but they use to make a tool for cleaning up and straightening relay contacts, it was called a burnishing tool, maybe try an industrial electronics store.

Are you sure the battery is good? Sometime there's enough voltage, but not enough amperage to turn over the starter. You could have it load tested, at an auto parts store. Also check the battery cables for corrosion, they tend to corrode from the inside out, if you twist them and they "crunch" they're probably bad. Clean the connections and apply dialectic grease. Also check the grounds, should be 5 or 6.

I don't think the vts goes through the mpem, but it does have an electronic module of its own. I've worked on a couple of vts and it's been the motor in both cases (probably gonna get different opinions here).

Oh, what year and model is your ski?

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. The ski is a 99 xpl 951. The batt is brand new, If I jump the terminals it rolls over very fast. Do you think soaking the pigtail in vinagar or baking soda and peroxide would hurt it?

So when you're saying jump the terminals, I guess you're talking about the solenoid which would indicate you need a new one.

Not sure about soaking the terminals in vinegar or baking soda and peroxide, the contacts are pretty delicate. I think I would try the CRC contact cleaner first, try brushing it off with an old tooth brush.

I just re-read your original post, forget replacing the solenoid.

OK. I just found the service manual and read it.. the section that was corroded on mine is plug number 2 on the mpem. It controls everything that is not working on mine. the vts, ignition, starter relay ect ect. Im going to see if i can clean it and find where it grounds.

what are the two little metal tabs sticking up off the top of the electrical box for? is something supposed to hook there?

The 2 metal tabs are for grounding your spark plug wires when you are working on the engine. If you don't ground the wires, and you crank the engine... you may short out the coil as the spark looks for a place to go. (this is if the wires are off the sparkplugs)

OK... I just read over everything... and to me... it sounds like your MPEM has gone bad. I've seen a bunch of them, that will start to randomly crank the engine, and do strange things after they get shorted out, either from jump starting the ski... or connecting the battery up backward.

As far as the corroded plug.... use a mild solvent (baking soda/Peroxide is fine) and a tooth brush to clean it. Don't bother soaking the plug, because you need to brush it, to clean it. The contact cleaner is good too... just make sure the one you buy is plastic safe.

heres the bad connections. look at the one. its actually missing a little piece of the male mpem probe.

here is the plug cleaned up the best i can.

I pray its not the mpem. Why they would ever put a computer in a 2 stroke watercraft is beyond me.

They get huge if you click them.
