Seadoodoc, I'm reminded of a Santana song.

MPEM is too expensive and hard to enter for me to risk. Maybe the day the CDI bites the dust I'll be peeling back the potting looking to replace the capacitors but till that day I'm not connecting anything more than 13.8V CLEAN DC to it.
Meanwhile, I'm considering installing a damping diode across the starter solenoid, there's just no telling where or by whom this thing was made but failure rates are scary high compared to other engine controllers, no surge protection was the cheap out for whomever the lowest contract bidder was that built them, I guess..
The 5A fuse blowing thing is b/c the surge protect diode inside shorts out but there are other failures too, like the starter solenoid driver and the unexplained CDI failures.
It might be a different story if I had an electrical schematic and the ability to replace internal components or could pick up a replacement MPEM for $50.
Till that day, I'll handle my MPEM with anti-static gloves.
