Ok.... So I put the jet pump back on, no issues....(so I thought)...
I fired her up... seems to be running ok...... but I am not sure if there is an issue with alignment..
the carbon seal thingy seems to vibrate a bit when I rev it..... and it gets hot as well

when I look when it is starting it seems like it may wobble..... not sure though it tough to tell

any suggestions are appreciated....... beginning to get a bit frustrated.....

TIA

I assume you are not in water when doing this test? If that us the case, that is why irbid getting hot. It is designed to leak. The controlled leak I what cools the carbon seal. Without water it will destroy itself in short order.

Yes you are correct.... not in the water...... so I guess it is not a good idea to continue to run this thing even with the hose hooked up.....
I am trying to figure out what holds the driveshaft centered.... is it the bearing of the impeller? Should I be concerned about this issue, or just take it out to the lake and see how it runs??

You guys are great by the way..... Lots of knowledge......

Thanks

The hose cools the engine only, nothing else.

The proper alignment if the engine is CRUCIAL. There is a chance the shaft is bent or the bearing/carrier system is going bad.

Someone that has intimate knowledge of the system can give you better details.

If you only removed the pump then reinstalled it using the same spacers (if any were there) then the alignment should not change. I would suggest if you think the alignment is incorrect to pull the spark plugs and roll the motor over by hand, it shouldn't bind and have tight spots.

Your carbon seal will overheat out of water in a couple minutes or less, I don't run mine more than 30secs and don't bother connecting the water hose for this short 30sec running. I guess you can run longer using water hose if you also tie the carbon seal back or better, remove the retaining clip.

The water around the drive shaft cools AND lubricates the carbon seal, so out of water running is no way to judge anything concerning it's condition or performance. Heat from friction will quickly damage the rubber parts and can crack the carbon seal.

I just put this motor in... So there was more than just a pump reinstall, however there were no spacers under the mounts....the PTO turns freely with no binding etc....So if it spins freely then it should be ok?
I am thinking that the bearing in the pump is what holds it in place???
I guess I will wait and bring it to the water and see if there is really an issue or not....
Thanks

If you pulled the motor than you need the alignment tool.

Officially, my answer is correct. Many choose not to do so but generally have issues wiping out the wear ring ad carbon seals as well as out undue stress off the backside I the engine.

Yea.... that's kind of what I had thought...... Does anyone know if there is a rental available, or just bite the bullet and purchase one???

i bought one used only once 145.00 shipped! via ebay. looked like it was never used and also came with shims!
i called a local dealer and they dont rent one but will align it for 135.00 . stb sells them for 149.00 or if you return it within a week i think, would only be 75.00 and refund the rest, shipping from sbt is expensive!! may as well keep it as it is too much $$ to ship.
i'll only sell mine when i'm too old to Doo it.

if i were you, i would buy one and have piece of mind, much cheaper than a misaligned engine/ pump.

With the large demand for the alignment tool. I am seriously thinking about buying one just for fellow members.

Charge them full price and refund most of the money upon its return in good condition...

This would at least have one easily available for those in need...

I would even be willing to chip in and help you pay for it, it would really be a great tool to have available for the members on this forum.

It's encouraging you feel no binding but I think you really should consider the alignment fixture regardless, your splines probably aren't properly aligned otherwise and will wear abnormally.

I plan to eventually buy one myself when this motor finally grenades.

Ha no peer pressure Joe! No reason not to charge a small convenience fee, I'm sure no one would mind paying a little, beats the heck out of the alternative....

In a perfect world I will never use it. So as far as I'm concerned it's cheap insurance. LOL

Ahhh... If the world was only perfect.... But now that you have one your can guarantee you will never need it, but the day you decide to get rid of it your motor will puke the next day! Thanks Murphy for your wonderful laws

gtfireftr, when you install and new motor it's just SOP to align the motor, this is going to be the solution to 90% of your problems. Also to test your ski you need to take it to the water, running it on the hose proves almost nothing.
