Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum but not to mechanical work on anything with wheels. As far as PWC this is my first Seadoo and its already giving me troubles. Took the ski out yesterday and it ran perfectly, went to start it up today and its a no go. Here is the timeline of what took place.

Placed DESS key on ski and the ski made 4 beeps instead of the normal 2 but still started? While it was running I removed the DESS key and it still kept running. I hit the stop switch and it turned off. I then was able to restart the ski without the DESS key insterted in the ski which is not good. Now the ski will not start and it continually gives me the 4 beep salute with or without the key inserted. I have pulled the fuses and replaced them with the same outcome. To get the thing to shut up I left the fuses out. On the gauge panel it says "check engine - P 1656" which is the trouble code for a short. My best guess it the actual DESS key plug on the ski (not the lanyard key) is faulty. I traced all of the wires and did not find any bad connections, water or corrosion.

Any suggestions would be a big help. If anyone has any questions regarding anything in the Corvette world I'm your man.

Well I never received any responses but I want to post this info for others who may run into this issue. The D.E.S.S. post was bad. Not the key iteself but the actual post on the ski. This is a simple fix if you have some basic mechanical skills. You will need to get part number: 278001734 (Safety Switch) which lists for: $96.75. I had a few friends over at the local Seadoo distributor and picked mine up for $75.00 out the door.

Remove both chrome trim covers on the handle bars, remove the lower plastic steering trim cover then loosen the plastic trim nut on the outside of the safety switch post and remove the switch.

The new switch pole will come with about 14" of new pigtail wires which are color coded to the ones on your ski. The best way to tie in the new switch is to cut the wires about 4" from the back of the switch then strip them back and tin them with solder. You then cut the wires on the new post leaving about 6" and then tin the wire ends. Slide some heat shrink over the wires then solder the corosponding colors together followed by setting the heatshrink over your soldering connections.

Next to be safe as this ski spends most of its life in saltwater I wrapped the wires in 3m electrical tape (dont use the cheap tape it falls off) and then covered the complete wire assembly in electrical grease all the way up to the back of the switch to fight off any water that may end up in the steering area.

There is easier quicker ways to attach the wires instead of soldering such as crimps or bullet connectors but I like to do things once and never have an issue at the most inconveinent of times like in the middle of Tampa Bay on a Sunday with no tow rope.

I hope this info helps someone else out who may have the same issue. Your local Seadoo dealer will get in the upwards of over $400 for this fix and your ski will be out of your hands for about 4 days or more in most cases. I finished this job in about 30 minutes and was back out on the water the next day.:hurray:
