Hi I have a 97 challenger 1800, I broke the tip off my reverse cable on the weekend. I've now fixed that but the boat won't start. One or no beeps when I put on the key. Could this cable be out of adjustment meaning I'm not in true neutral? Anyone know about this???

Sorry, I don't know the answer, I think it's something with the neutral switch. I'm gonna move this to the 2-stroke boat section, I think you'll get more help there.

did you replace the cable? or somehow repair the end?
the shifter needs to be in the correct neutral for the switch to function correctly.
you should be able to feel the "detent" in the shifter when going in or out of neutral. try there and see what happens...

Thanks palerider. I used a longer nut to reattach tip of the cable shaft. It means the location where the shifter bracket is connected has now moved up maybe a 1/16 of an inch. This would affect switch wouldn't it? Could I compensate for that by adjusting the threaded bolt that holds the cable on somehow? I'd rather not have to buy the expensive reverse cable.

The neutral switch is in the levers. So... unless you had them out, to get to the other end of the cable... it shoudl be OK. BUT... I would still check the switch. It could be a coincidence that it had an issue too.

With that said... if you get one beep.... did you try to move the shift lever?

But, as Joe said... one beep means it's not reading the lanyard. (try cleaning the contacts)

Thanks I'll try the cleaning again I did wipe them down. I have two lanyards, same response. It was the shifter handle end I had out. I saw the little black switch box. Didn't touch it though. I thought.... Are they really finicky?

yes, they have to be in the sweet spot. just try moving the lever to the neutral detent and see if anything changes.

we had similar experiences. I watch the PO finagle with the shift lever to get the correct beep and fire the engines, only for me to discover that the cable itself was bent really bad and in need of replacement...
and I replaced the cable, worth it IMHO

IMHO, just replace that cable, bc if it fails you have no way to shift and properly operate the boat, unless you do a Macgyver move

Lol. Thanks I already tried the MacGyver move on the water the day it happened. I had just pulled away from the beach on the river when it broke. I think my throttle was up a tiny bit when I put it in forward. Damn!!! I had Allan keys and vice grips on board. So I pulled apart shifter found the bottom nut on with a few threads left so I to off the shifter plate and moved under the nut and tried to lock on with vice grips. No luck. I guess I'm gonna have to replace the cable. :(

Why can't you bypass the neutral switch? or rewire it to a push button that tells the boat it's in neutral whenever the button is pushed no matter what position the handle is in?

Has anyone written up the McGyver move? I looked over the sticky's and didn't see it.

Neutral switch - Yeah, the old boats didn't have one. The one in my shifter lives a nervous life.

bc that safety device is there for a reason, not only to ensure you do the right starting/throttling/shifting procedure for that boat, otherwise there is nothing to prevent the boat from starting in F or R and hitting the dock or worse yet, someone in the water...

don`t mess with jury rigging the neutral system...

You get different beeps I think 4 of them when the shifter is not in place. A new cable is like $120, SBT and Ebay sells them. You will se suprised how much smother the level moves with a new cable. If your tried both keys I would say look at the DESS post or repalce it.
