I was wondering if it is possiable to make your own keel guard, as they cost an arm and a leg to buy. I read that some people used bed liner paint or under coating, any thoughts on that?
But if you buy a keel guard wouldn't that cause a drag more than the truck liner stuff. Also wouldn't having scratches on the v of the hull do the same?
Spim, how is that so?......I also heard that if you wax the hull (or haul as some people type) you gain .0001 MPH.
Yes the guards are horribly costly. I checked Overtons a couple years ago for one for my boat, I almost choked on the battery acid I was drinking for breakfast, I had to go outside in the garage and sniff some car fumes to recover.....
I bought 2 keel guards (the brand name is Keelguard) for my 98 GSX and 97 GTX as I was planning on keeping them and wanted
something to protect the hull as our beaches are not great up here. They both worked just great even though the price was a little
high but they did what I wanted. Then I moved up to 2002 with a narrower top hull design and Keelguard stopped making them
for that age/design (virtually all the seadoos now). They said I could try trimming the guard at the top where it narrows but
the edges are beveled as well so you have to be pretty experienced I would think to do it right otherwise it'll just peel off the hull
when riding. I may still try it but not at this point.
FWIW they did work very well on the 97 and 98. Did exactly what they said would do. No speed issues at all as they are designed
to not affect the water flow.
See I have some deep scratches on the v part of the hull from the PO, I wetsanded the best I could without taking to much off, and thought the bed line shield would be good protection, just the bottom v strip only.
When I was talking to the keelguard people about my 2002 and possibly modifying the older keelguards, they said that
it was imperative that the top of the keelguard be forward enough to remain out of the water. If the keelguard top is
at or below water line it would loosen and eventually peel off. Just an FYI. As I said I was 100% happy with the ones
I had. I'm very disappointed that they stopped making them for newer-hulled seadoos.
