Get 1 beep while trying to start ski

When I put the key on the post I get 2 beeps. Then push the start button and most of the time the engine will turn over but only a couple of cranks, then I get 1 beep and it stops turning over. It will not turn over long enough in order to start it.

I know that 2 beeps means that the computer recognizes the key and 1 beep is the opposite. Is there something else that the 1 beep is trying to tell me while I am turning the engine over?

I find it odd that everytime I put the key on the post it gives me 2 beeps without a problem.

Sounds like a DESS post issue. Do you have a spare one you can try out?

If not I think I have one I can send you for whatever the shipping cost is on it. I'm not using it

Ya I was thinking DESS post as well, what is confusing me is that it only malfunctions on starting.

I appreciate the offer.

Thanks guys. I did try a battery out of one of my other skis which was brand new this year.........same issue. Would it be normal for the beeper to give one beep if the battery was low or starter not getting a good connection? I have not noticed this before.

Once it is started I don't think it looks at the key anymore as far as being matched. It just recognizes that there is a key there. So I believe that the only time you would have an issue is when it is trying to start...

Its an electrical issue.. Ive recently had it happen myself. Mine was a low battery. could also be ground. maybe even solenoid

when the battery took a crap on me in the middle of the lake, it would give two beeps when i put the key on, then any load, such as trying to move the trim, would cause the voltage to drop too low and the mpem would reset, and give a long beep when the battery recovered.

Never seen a solenoid or low battery give the 1 beep. But I guess anything is possible with electrical systems

he said he gets 2 beeps and then when he tries to start it goes dead, then 1 long beep. if the battery is good, then i would bet on either a loose connection or corrosion somewhere.

Ok, did some more trouble shooting based on what you guys have mentioned. Battery was weak under load. It would drop to 10.2 volts while starting then give me one beep as Strizzo also mentioned. The odd thing is that none of my other skis have done this with a low battery. That was why I was thinking the DESS post.

Put a new battery in and now it turns over better but still at times it will only crank 5-6 times and the starter shuts off, but no beep now. Also, now I dont have any spark. So I will need to test the coil.

Just to be sure, if I put my meter on the white wire on the bottom of the coil, should I get a fluctuating reading??

I tested the white wire on the coil and did not get any volts. So I unplugged the connection on the mag housing and tested for ohmn between the black and black/red wire. I did not get a reading, so I am guessing that it is the stator or a part from the stator.

Can anyone tell me what to look for or test to determine which part to purchase?? Do I need to replace the whole assembly on a 720 or is there a part that controls just the spark?

I have not been able to get spark as of yet so I am going to replace the stator/magneto. I dont have the "seadoo tools" to remove the flywheel in order to get to the magneto. Does anyone have a way of doing this without the flywheel removal tools? Also is there anything specific I should watch out for while replacing the stator/magneto?

Aren't the stator and/or ignition pickup mounted to the stator cover? I suspect you don't have to remove flywheel unless it's damaged(magnets)? I've never been inside an Rotax-720 but I think that's what I recall from thumbing through various isometric drawings....

unfortunately the 720 stator is behind the flywheel. It is not like the 787. I guess I could stuff a rag in the exhaust port and try cracking the nut loose. I am not a big fan of doing that, seems to me it would be hard on the internals.

I was hoping for some way of doing it without pulling the exhaust off.

Did you get it off?? If not just take a air impact wrench to the bolt and it'll come right off. You'll have to move the gas tank forward a few inches to get the impact wrench in there. Then you'll need a 3 prong puller tool that screws into the flywheel. you can get them at auto parts store for $20. Crank that baby as hard as you can and then keep cranking! It will eventually pop off. if not hit it with a hammer.

Please keep us updated. I'm having a very similar issue with mine. thanks!

get the mag cyl to tdc, then back it off about a half inch, stuff a nylon rope down the spark plug hole. then remove the nut, the rope will keep the engine from turning over safely. any standard heavy duty puller will remove the flywheel, you can get a free rental from the auto parts store that will work. to remove the rope turn the engine the opposite direction and the rope will come right out. one caution is to make sure you are not exposing the ports in the cylinder or the rope will get caught in it and do damage.

Thanks to all for the help, I used the rope in the cylinder method and was able to get the nut off. I did not have an impact wrench. Minnetonka was able to give me a good deal on a magneto assembly and problem is now solved.
