didn't want to start a whole new thread for a simple question, and I know we have lots of vets and experts that watch this thread :)

quick question, the bellow or rubber hose on my vts is all torn and busted up? is that going to leak? i know it's a simple q's that can prob be answered in the water, but i'm pretty impatient, and won't be testing it til tomorrow

Nam, don't put that in the water, they are cheap, even at the dealer.

I would pull the VTS cover off and see if there is water in there. Hopefully it is not in the module either. Does the VTS still work?

lol, but I have to see if it will run, i "rebuilt" the carbs all by myself, i'm so proud of myself for it turning on, BUT, just about everytime i push the start button, I have to just give it a little bit of gas, then it's fine

I have no idea if the vts still works, everytime i turn it on, i forget to check, i'll go check now

lol nam, ya, that will leak, you have two options,,,
1) fix vts ($100) fix boot $13
2) pull vts out, and buy a bilge pump plug at hardware store for like $9, and fahgettaboutit
3) kinda like 1a) fix boot $13, but leave trim alone

(note option 2 would be best if vts / trim is now set right near zero, maybe a hair off, and unless you used to change your trim all the time (not likely) you won't really miss something you didn't know you had right ?)

i might have a used vts that i'd need to test that i'd sell ya cheap.

here's a pic of the bilge plug, from west marine, but ace hardware has them too, lower left circled.

i can't remember if I bought 1' or 1 1/4" to cover the hole right, it wasn't that big, you stick it in, then twist it , it expands, then you pop the clamp over to give it that last squeeze and its tight as a nun. if in doubt on the hole, just buy both sizes and save the receipt, return the extra.

based on your situation in general,i'd suggest just pulling and plugging the dam thing, it won't be any more work than replacing the boot :), you can always go back to option 1 later, and your only out $10bux and a trip to the hardware store. right between the 3 circles you'll see the two screws in the hull, those held down the vts bracket, i popped them out, pulled the vts, then just put the 2 screws back in.

Sorry if I missed something but If you pull the original trim hardware and insert the plug don't you have to replace trim linkage with something?

A slightly modified (hacked) hx manual adjuster works great.

BTW, last boot I replaced I went ahead and used the oem plastic boot clips instead of the stainless house clamps.

correct, if you pull everything and plug it, the only trim option is the manual hx trim, i think i piad like $40 for mine, but they're hard to come by these days.

but you can just leave it fixed, near the middle, pull everything and plug the hole, and have no trim adjustment, i was just suggesting a 2nd option thats cheap.

Right now getemkustoms is parting out an hx. He just posted it the other day so the manual trim is probably still available. $40 shipped would be a fair price.

If you pull everything and plug the hole what keeps the trim locked in place?

thanks for all the info guys, i appreciate the options spim, i thought the boot would be cheapest and easiest, but it looks like the vts removal is pretty solid too, i'll prob go with the bilge plug, is it actually the same thing as a boat drain plug?

and yea racerxxx, it did leak, i was squirting water in there to clean off the salt and rust, and it was coming out the back

The cheapest option has to be just replacing the boot, what is it like 10 bucks or something? And then you can manually adjust the trim with the screw behind the motor. Will be faster than removing the whole vts, and would probably look better if you were ever trying to resell it...

ya, goes both ways, but I agree, and yes, $40 is about spot on for the manual trim, and even if you don't want it, buy it, because i'd love to have a spare !!! the hx trims are weird, impossible to find, but only $40 when you do :)

with the bilge plug (yes boat plug) the only nice thing is a nice clean look inside the hull afterwards, all that plastic is gone.

i was guessing on the vts boot prices, but they're probably $10-15.

and now that i'm thinking, if you pulled the vts "contraption" your trim would just dangle, i forgot about that, i've had the manual trim so long i wasn't thinking
