First time on the water 99 GTX limited

So I finally got a chance get the ski in the water and it ran beautiful. Went through the carbs, changed the gray lines. I'm running sunoco 260 gt race fuel and it runs really well and of course smells good. Not sure what the top speed is this ski but I got the speedo to 60 with me and two kids on it. Thanks for all the help you guys gave me on this forum.

Unless you have a reason to run race fuel... you are wasting money, and you can cause engine probs. Since most race fuels are high Octane, they will still be burning when the exhaust port opens. That will put extra heat on the edge of the piston, and can cause a melt down. Also, many 2-stroke oils don't like to stay mixed with race fuels.

You are better off to run 91 pump fuel.

I was under the impression the 951 ran on 87... something along the lines of page 39/96 of the 1998 manual...

and 43/109 in the '99 manual...

I've tried 87, 89, 92, and ethanol free.... found that... I can't tell a bit of difference between them... and... if they use ethanol to boost octane, you are losing HP per gallon over 87... not to mention $$$.$$

Until this year I have used BP Premium 93 octane, I use BP because it's straight gas, no ethanol, with the exception of when I buy gas at the marina.

This year, because of the price of gas, I am still using BP and dropped down to 87 octane, I can tell no difference.

I am pretty sure that gas is like a 96 octane "race gas" I was looking thru a pamphlet and they have many types of "race fuels" that arent 100+ octane.

If you want to run the cleanest freshest gas out there....you cant beat it. Too bad its like 7.00 a gal.

Yes, the original spec was 87... but with our "Oxygenating" fuels, 89 is safer. (less prone to detonation) FYI... that's what I personally use... mid grade. But, on the 951 engine, it likes the 90/91 better. (just a personal observation)

Thanks for all the insite and I will mix in 91 with the fuel and run that from now on. I run this in my motorcycles and sons quad so I will keep it to the bikes.

How do you know BP's Premium is Ethanol free? I don't know about KY, but I know in Illinois ALL pump gas has 10% Ethanol.

Unless they speciffically state that it's Ethanol free, It's probably got ethanol in it.

Which brings me to "exception of when I buy gas at the marina", All "Marine" fuel is Ethanol free (Unless it says otherwise, which I've never seen).

We only have 1 station in my area that sells non-ethanol fuel, which is a co-op, not a mainstream gas station and it's very well labeled that it is Ethanol free, It's also quite a bit higher then any other station's fuel prices, but still cheaper then marina fuel prices.

On the pump there is a plackard that says "NO ETHANOL", the pump despenses all three grades, I assume there is no ethanol in all three grades.

I have never asked about gas at the marina, however there is no plackard.

In KY we have no law requiring all gas to contain alchol, at least not yet.

I have relatives that live in the Chicago area, and I believe their gas, by law is oxiginated also.

Funny thread this.
In Oz,they have pumps to say if the ethonol is IN the fuel.Most of our fuel is still ethonal free.
10 pumps at the gas station and only 2 are eth.
Bet it changes though

I had a hotted up car you guys call a GTO and now have an EVO IX.It has to run 98 oct. fuel.
Where do you guys get higher oct. fuel??? if you can't get it at the pump.
What happens to the high perfomance guys?

Here, the Corvette Club keeps, hi-octane, 100 octane (I think), at H&R Oil, an independent. Anyone can buy this gas but it's over 7.00 gal.

Evo iv needs 98 octane??? I have a 06 Sti it runs on premium 93 octane. Who told you 98 I have many friends with evos 500+ hp on pump gas 93 oct

Hmm, That's awesome! I've just never seen that before! I've been to Missouri, California, Nevada, Illinois, Indiana all of these states says "Contains 10% ethanol" on all gas station pumps.

I don't know that it's a state requirement, but rather that these gas companies get tax credits from the federal government.

Marina gas doesn't says it doesn't have Ethanol, but If you ask the marina the'll tell you. Boats/Ethanol don't mix well, especially older boats.

The Evo ix on 98?
A good mate has won 2 Austalian titles in the G.T. production series in evo's and both him and his engine builder suggested I run the best fuel you can get.The car isn't tuned as standard either.The fuel is about 30 cents a gallon dearer. I wasn't going to argue with them.These guys have a lot of racing experience as they do the series racing and also endurance racing with a lot of success.Their best being the Bathurst 12 enduro at Mount Panorama.Google it and have a look at the track.It will amaze you.
