exhaust manifold

ok so from my other thread was told there should be a bolt here but i looked at the manual and only the SP shows the bolt going in.
i have the SPX and i doubted the manual so took the entire exhaust out because i just couldnt get the bolt in so i thought the previous dude broke a bolt in there so i had to take the manifold out and here is what i see:

it doesnt look like a broken bolt but the hole is really blocked almost like a weld.
so what should i do? the exhaust pipe hole does match up to the manifold so should i tap this so i can put a bolt through?

good think i took it off anyway cuz the starter is missing a bolt (PTO side) on that little bracket so i will go get that from home depot, part #23 - HEX. SCREW M8 X 16.

also why was there 2 gaskets on between exhaust manifold and the engine for the mag side and only one on pto side? what should i do? should i keep them the same? they gaskets are in good condition

here is what i though is a broken bolt...
should i tap this out and put get the tool to put some thread in there and get a bolt? 2 pics below is where the bolth should start going in...the attached pic is the other end where bolt comes out

It is my understanding that the 717 engines can snap and/or strip the exhaust to manifold bolts. This has happen to me on 2 different motors. On one I was lucky enough to be able to get the bolt out with a sharp punch. On the other I drilled a pilot hole and got it out with an easy-out. I have also had stripped manifolds. On those I got the right sized drill, drilled a little deeper in the manifold, made new threads and basically epoxied in a stud that I put a nut on.

As far as the 2 gaskets, that doesn't sound right.

I am loving the reverse drill bits...EZ outs push out and make it harder to get bolts out. Not to say they dont work, but with the reverse bits it heats up the broken bolt and a couple pushes and out it comes.

Obviously the exhaust mani has to come out to get the bolt out..only one gasket on each side.

cant get this damn bolt out..
been drilling and drilling and broke one bit already.
the other tool that is meant from this wont even dig into the bolt or is just taking forever.
i used a cordless then even tried my power drill and just doesnt go too far.
i think tomorrow i will go to a mechanic and have them taking it out for me.

They prob crossthreaded it and broke it off. A lot of the bolts holding the pipe to the manifold break b/c of that bolt not being installed...and those almost always come out easy.

wonderful ****ing holidays...
problems with the girl and breaking up and this stupid manifold.
been at it all day, finally got it drilled through. looks like it was a stud not even a bolt.
i was using the tap and drill to make new threads and the ****ing thing snaped in there and blocked the hole right back up. once again back to scratch and i messed up the entire whole that now i have to get to a machine shop to just weld that hole and make a new hole or something like that.

well got the hole so now i went and got a 1/4in bolt but it wont even go in to the hole. gotta strech it out just a bit but its just getting worse so i dunno wht to really do

ya not going to do that because broke two taps already, the first time it got stuck and had to drill it out and took a few hrs. i tried to tap a thread but damn thing is really tight in there because of the broken stud/bolt that was originally there.
does metric go any less than 1/2inch?

I know they use 1.25 pitch thread. my be #10
Home depot has bins in the hardware section. Find right drawer with bolt# and right thread pitch.
They also have a gauge to find size and pitch if you have one that fits through hole but not long enough.

Solution would be to bolt it from the other end with a nut??

yup definately need to bolt it at the other end. the smallest size they got is 1/4" that i gotta get through this damn hole

got the bolt to barely go through. i think it will work.
i sanded it down with wire brush and gave it 3 coats of engine enamel, high temp paint

strapped for money anyway at this time so no more expenses lol

Merry Christmas Murjiim. Glad you got the manifold worked out, and the cost was right!! Well, was that $.60 Canadian or US? Sounds like everyone has had problems like that with manifolds on the 717. On mine I drilled further into the manifold lug and used a longer bolt. I would tell you that it has held up perfectly, but don't want to jinx myself!!!

well got it all installed but that darn bolt i got is too big...the threads arent all the way through the bolt but just the tip end so i was going to put a nut on the other end but it will still have some play.
what bolt did you use El Toro?
i think i got the 1/4 3"long...if i get a 2.5" long i think its too short and it will be a pain to get the nut on. so maybe i might get a full threaded one and just cut it to the correct size.
forgot to take pics of it installed so far but i will post once i get this bolt on there...
i like how i painted it black...looks really nice actually.
it appears to me that the mufler and this manifold were definately painted..original should be white and its grey and the mufler is also grey but when i took the main big pipe of it i could see some purple to match the exhaust pipes. also the 8 bolts that attach the exh manifold to the engine had paint on them...someone painted this whole thing with a brush or something...also on the small pipes and the oil pump lever there was paint on it and its all chipping off.
