Engine tapping or knocking noise at idle - looking for possible sources

That engine has a nasty shake to it and sounds pretty rough. There is a reason he will not let you water test it. PASS

Good call, there is something fishy with that thing. Unless your willing to gamble another $1500 for a rebuild and to get it all up to snuff there no sense. Another one will come around, just keep your eyes open. Yeah, the thing is though, it's really hard to detect problems unless you can actually splash it. I'm amazed any shop that's not on the water has any confidence when sending a ski or even boat out the door after major work if they can't splash it first.

I agree, but clearly that's not pump rattle. That thing is violent.

sounds like something caught in the rotary valve, most likely the rotary valve is bent in a way that its not stripping the gear. if you listen to the frequency it sounds like it is 2 times per rotation so it would have to be something that affects both cylinders. probably explains why it doesn't want to idle too.

Amazing sometimes how an old motor clanking and clunking will start right up while new reman ones won't even pop or spit....
