I have no idea exactly what happened. I had just put the carbs back on, I had also cleaned the rave valves, was running on trailer for a quick test, engine sounded better than it had since I got it a few months ago. I had brought rpm up to about 4500, rpm would make a jump to 5000, I figure the raves opened then. Let idle a min and brought back up, I was looking at the tach when it made strange noise and something hit my finger, engine then running very strange. Pulled lanyard, looked around, saw a small piece of metal, think I am gonna need a new engine. Will get it out in a week or two and check damage. Where is best place for engine, SBT, SES or someone else, I may even check with the folks on here that have used parts and see what they may have that they feel good about. Well gotta go help set up for a party tonight, my birthday, several other birthdays and wedding anniversaries, we are calling it a corner party, it is on a vacant lot owned by the person hosting. Be back later.

It's hard to say what happened, one of the rave valves could have shattered, and if you're lucky didn't get into the engine. For future reference, it's not a good idea to rev. the engine with no load, but you've probably already figured that out.

Check and see where the metal "piece" came from. It could be a RAVE, connecting rod, even a PTO

Do some more investigating before commiting to a new engine!

RAVE valves good, checked last night, first chance I have had to look at it, looked through RAVE holes, pistons look ok, at least the little bit I could see, pulled plugs, could not turn by hand but starter will turn, good air pop out of PTO cyl, very weak air pop from MAG cyl. I will keep checking until I find the problem before I buy an engine, if I can repair I will do that, will have to see what I find.

Midway , I have a spare 787 if you are looking or need any parts, just shoot me a PM

I will keep that in mind, I was just reading about your good fortune. Makes me wonder just how good or bad your spare is.

It looks good, still has the eom starter on it and all. If you are in need of an engine, I'll get a compression reading and all that. I don't want much at all for it, I basically bought a trailer and got an xp and spare motor free.

* the spare engine came out of a 96 or 97 Gtx with about 45 hours on it. The hull was damaged beyond repair.

Hull damaged beyond repair sounds like it ran good at that time, of course, damage could happen while not running. Sounds interesting.

PM sent, hope you did not get multiples

I have not checked my compression, I did try to spin engine by hand, with plugs out, could not turn it, tried starter and it would turn, held hand a couple inches above spark plug holes, strong pop of air on PTO cyl, very weak pop of air on MAG cyl. I have the exhaust out so I can check the back side of the engine in the morning, have the feeling if is not going to be pretty, I see white painted pieces of metal laying in the hull on that side. I will see what I can in the AM and go from there.

pull the head. It's super easy and doen't ruin gaskets. You can take it off, and put it back on, just make sure you get all the crap off the bolts, and chase the threads out, and use lock-tite on the bolts before assembling again. Once you take the head off, you'll be able to see the piston crowns. That should tell you a lot.

Rod snapped. That is the new air conditioned cases they came out with.

As many of us know its whats on the inside that counts!!

Pull off the head and inspect the pistons and cylinders, also pull the rv cover off and shine a flashlight to see if there is any water/rust that might be visible on the crank..

I'm not going to dig into it that deep. I'm selling it very cheap. I could strip it down and sell it for wayyyy more. I'm not looking to make a ton of money, just selling it to help someone in need a good motor/ or core. It turns over with a the starter and by hand easily.

Hard to find a motor in decent shape with everything on it for 200-250$
