Large back fire and it shut down around 4500 rpm. I'm sure this is a direct failure caused by my last break down. I'm sure when my whole super charger came apart last time, a piece of it must have damaged my timing chain. This was a huge mistake to overlook this. I was so excited that I got all the pieces out, and replaced the oil pump. .. that I never thought of timing chain damage. Lesson learned. Took out 4 valves on the Center cylinder. No piston damage. Installing riva retainers and pro marine valves now. . How to be back going this weekend. I will up date the thread as we build it back up. uploadfromtaptalk1378257678666.jpg

That's scary, it's my third time hearing the sea doo ski timing chain for breaking off, my Toyota pickup has about 100 thousand miles on it, I think it's time to replace the timing belt with a new one.

That suxs... any pics of the broken ends of the timing chain itself though? Does it look like something got in the chain, some piece from the previously blown supercharger?

I've read repeatedly (and pretty much believe it) if your supercharger blows apart the only way to get every little bit of it out of the engine is to pull the engine out and apart clean it out completely and check everything before putting it back together! It's absolutely no fun at all. :-(

Good luck and hope you get it all back together and running right in short order!

Dude I love that you have an X4 beside that RXP. Seriously a sweet combo!! I might emulate someday soon :) I'm looking at buying a Doo whose timing chain also broke. Probably due to supercharger fail, but the guy doesn't know it. Anyway, is it guaranteed that the valves will get damaged? Are these interference engines? He said the head seems okay.

Also, I heard that there was a new type of chain out there for these skis. The older 04's and stuff have a new pt number for chains. Also heard that the new 2011's had a recall on the chain as they were making them out of cheese for that year... Do you know what the right chain to get is?

Are there a lot of special tools you need to work on these motors?

Pull the air intake hose off the supercharger and see if you can turn it with your fingers... if it spins easily (or freely even!) then it's come apart inside and parts will be scattered inside the engine (and may be responsible for the broken timing chain). Broken timing chain, in all probabilty at least some valves in the head will have been damaged... just figure on it.

No really exotic tools needed, a good adjustable torque wrench and a few sockets mostly... get an OEM Maintenance manual for the torque specs when putting the engine back together and go over the instructions until you know them by heart! If you do anything wrong, it won't hold together for long. Replace ALL stretch bolts that you remove (these bolts have rings all along their stems from the threads to the head, they're not normal looking bolts... they're found holding the head to the engine case and a few other areas in the engine case itself), do NOT re-use these bolts they can't be stretched again without a high risk of breaking. Replace the head gasket also, do not re-use!

Good luck, and don't pay too much cause you're going to have to put some hours into fixing that engine and I doubt the seller is getting any offers on the machine in that condition... consider that you're buying a hull only with a bunch of engine parts which may or may not be usable and make your best offer based on that!

ps. You don't mention the year model you're looking at, but be aware than '04 and '05 and some early '06 models have hollow exhaust valves that are prone to cracking and breaking off... if it's one of those years, I'd recommend going ahead and replacing all the valves with upgraded solid core ones!

That's exactly the kind of advice I'm looking for. THANKS! It's an 04 RXT. It's too long of a hull for what I'm looking for, but I'm only interested in the motor and driveline. I have a special project I'm considering.

Also note there are many bolts that are stretch bolts that must be replaced.

I am not much of a 4stroke guy, but a very knowledgeable source tells me there is a updated chain in the '10? and above machines. He said to not expect even getting 2-300 hours out of the old ones. Thats SC and non SC motors.

When I told him about my project he told me I'd be a fool not to replace it.

Good to know! So does that regard only OEM, or did the aftermarket take suit as well? Like if I buy from Seadoo Warehouse, are they going to have the beefier chains? I noticed that the 215's take different part numbers between 2006 and 2012. How come? It's the same engine/SC right? Are 2006 Supercharged GTX 215 intercooled?
