Changing Jet Pump Oil - Which Flange/Gasket Maker should I use

I am about to change my jet pump oil (yes, I should have done it last fall). In my Sportster Shop Manual, it suggests using Loctite 518 Gasket Eliminator on the jet pump cover when resealing the pump. Loctite 518 is an anaerobic flange sealant. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck in tracking this stuff down locally. Most stores (even my Seadoo retailer) only carry aerobic cure gasket maker like Permatex Blue, Black or Copper. :(

The closest I can find is Loctite 515, which is an anaerobic gasket maker, but obviously not the same properties as 518. I have read through the spec sheets of 515 and 518 on the Loctite website, and most of the info is gobbeldygook to me.

So, my question is - why do y'all use to seal the jet pump cover when you change your jet pump oil? Any advice is appreciated.

I used Loctite 518 which I had a hard time finding. I ended up ordering it online. One tube will last you the life of the boat. My 2 cents is to use the correct stuff.

I make sure the o-ring is good, and just give it a wipe of black RTV. (very thin) And on the fill plug, I use fuel system thread sealer. (it doesn't get hard)

But as said above... using the recommended stuff is probably the best.

Like that suggested by pincusa, I am inclined to use the stuff that BRP suggests, unless a few people reply that they have successfully used something else.

Black RTV is a standard vanilla aerobic gasket sealer - anyone else use this for the jet pump?

Ooops - my mistake - black RTV isn't a vanilla gasket maker - it is the one that is good for sealing oil. And so is loctite 515 and 518.

I would like to do a quick poll - what do y'all use on your jet pump cover? Ultra Black RTV, Loctite 518 or somethign else?

I made sure the oring was good and going in there tight, then used black rtv silicone around the entire cone, then used blue locktite on the screws.

Again, my 2cents, but just order the 518 and get it done. It will cost you a few $ more, but it will be done correctly and chances are less that you'll be doing it a second time

what about a thin swipe of some permatex red, it does not get hard either... and is good for sealing oil and high temp???

I work for an Autozone, and I know for a fact we carry 518 back in the commercial department. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't sell it to an DIY customer, as a sale is a sale. Ask the parts guy to check with the sealants and chemicals in the backroom. Ours sits in a box on a shelf with some other proprietary sealants and chemicals.

Never hurts to ask them. Ask an employee that has some clout unless you know your usual parts guy.

Thanks everyone,
Managed to find the Permatex direct equivalent of Loctite518 - Permatex #51813 - at a Napa Auto Parts dealership. Not sure if all stores carry it, but this one certainly did. Wasn't cheap ($25 for a 50ml tube) but at least I know I am using the right stuff.
