Carb tuning airbox question

When you tune your carbs like for proper idle speed in the water, do you need to have the flame arrestor installed?

It seems like a pain if you do because every little adjustment would require the removal of the airbox again

Thanks

you can set idle , with airbox assy on, especially, with your boat.

so just leave the lower part of the airbox assembly on, with the flame arrestor screen set in place... then run it... then remove the screen to adjust settings?

or put the black top of the airbox assembly on before running?

thanks for the response

cant set/tune, with airbox assy off, or any part of the airbox assy, being removed. The manifold pressure will be different, the air intake will be differet, then run'n condition. Keep assy intact, then fish around to find the idle screw, turn accordingly.

gotcha! thanks!

well i finished the top end rebuild, and rebuilt my carbs......

i have both engines idling at 1500 in the water (2000 out of water... but i guess thats not a big deal). both fire right up, and the boat runs great.... up until the 5000-7000 RPM range

i'm not sure what is supposed to happen at 5000 RPMs for these engines (popoff occurs? raves open?) but both engines will shoot from 5k to 7k and hover there for a few seconds, then drop to 5k, then shoot to 7k again for a few seconds, then drop back down to 5k... etc.... they have a mind of their own

if i go full throttle to get the engines to 7k but cut back on the throttles a little bit before they drop to 5k, then they will run fine at high 6000's range without falling back.

so does this mean theyre getting too much fuel?

popoff is around 42, LSA is 1.5, HSA is 0, 67.5 pilot jets, 122.5/125 main jets

also... the RAVE's are clean and i unscrewed their caps so the red part is flush with the black lip

this is so frustrating... any idea what i should do?

i should also note that the engines drop from 7k to 5k separately... they seem completely independent of each other... like one will drop and the other will drop slightly later (up to a couple seconds later) and vice versa. its not like they are doing the jumps at exactly the same time

Sent you a PM too... but I really have a gut feeling that it's your RAVE's. You may want to put a little more pressure on them. when the RPM's drop... the RAVE's should drop back to get your torque to come up. sounds like they are prematurely opening.
