98 Speedster shaft protector

What is the purpose and how important is the plastic shaft protector ( PROTECT-SHAFT
204120130 2 $14.99 $11.99 on a 98 speedster. I'm replacing the starboard engine and going thru the pump and found the protector destroyed. Thanks, Rick

Just more of a safety feature than anything. That driveshaft spins pretty fast so you can understand that if a rope or long hair or anything like that got caught up in it during servicing or driving it could be painful and/or expensive.

I sucked a ski rope and destroyed one, so I took both off. They're worthless in my eyes.

If they aren't perfect... they cause cavitation. AND... when you suck up a rope... they just get busted.
