Hey out there! My 97 GTX has been acting strange lately. I can drive at 5000 rpm all day long with no issues. As soon as I give it foll throttle it reaches 50 MPH (7000rpm)and then just drops to idle as if I let off the gas. It doesn't stall and will surge up to 7000 and drop off continuously if I keep the throttle on. Carbs have been cleaned, and adjusted fuel lines are new and fuel valve cleaned. It really seems like its running out of fuel not spark but I'd like to hear what you think...Thanks...BRANT

You are describing a plug , or an air leak in the fuel system.

Sounds like it needs to come apart again.

Hey Tony! I took it apart this weekend ! What am I missing? Any suggestions what to look for? Pop-off pressures are 23psi. The pulse line holds 10 psi. all hoses are clamped tight. When you say "plug" do you mean a blockage?..........BRANT

Go back and double check the fuel selector valve, for testing just bypass it. I have not had much success in cleaning the valve, there's a rubber washer inside that deteriorates over time.

Thanks Lou! I'll try that. I tried "reserve" and "on" with the same result but I didn'nt consider by-passing it....BRANT

OK Problem solved!!! Thanks very much!! I changed out the fuel selector valve from my other machine and Voila!!! It runs perfectly. This site is the best. I hope I can help some of you out someday....BRANT

Isn't it a wonderful feeling when you find the problem w/o the help of a (st)dealership?

Glad you found the problem. Sometimes the simplest solutions slips by us until someone else suggests it....Good catch Lou!!

Mine had a similar problem, took it to a shop and found out it was a blown out piston. But I'm pretty sure that's not your problem if it keeps hitting 7000 RPM. I'm thinking once you hit the full throttle something may be causing the throttle to close up.
