RESTO 96 XP Resto Project: Clapped out

You just need to call them and give them the hin and they will know if its been updated, but if your tank is a yellowish orange it probably hasnt been done if its newer it will have a blue tint. I just took two xps in with the motors in but i am redoing 2 gsxs right now and i asked them if i could bring them in with the motors out and they said yes. I would rather take the motors out myself, after all the buffing, painting and after redoing the seat and foot pads i would rather remove and install the motor myself. You know they are not as careful as you would be working on your own stuff. Plus the dealer would rather do it with the motor out too since they are charging seadoo the full labor without doing the labor

I called my local dealer about my gtx, they said it was under the recall, but that they didn't work on two strokes anymore so I'd have to take it to somewhere else. Anyone get this kind of bizarre response? Seems like they shouldn't be allowed to refuse to fix it since it is a safety recall, no?

I would assume if they still sell seadoos they would be obligated to fix seadoo recalls, at least they should be able to order the tank. Call and talk to the manager, they should at least point you in the right direction

Right on, I'll call the dealer later this week or once we get power back in town. A new tank would push the resto just one step further!

I need to do that with mine! Will they just give you the tank? or do they have to install it? my ski is in pieces...hah! Would rather not put it on the trailer if I don't have to.

I'm hoping that I can walk in and walk out, My father has know the dealership family for 30+ years. Heck, I'd have to put mine on my utility trailer, my double place isn't ready yet.

Hopefully bringing the old one will work.

I was wondering if you updated the fuel tank before you put the motor back in?

Called the Dealer a few minutes ago, they just got power back. They are checking into it for me.

And just for your future reference, you don't need to pull the engine on a 96 XP to get the tank out. Took me 30 seconds, I didn't have the hoses hooked up yet, so I popped the straps, removed the baffle and she slipped right out the hood opening!

Now I hope I can get a brand new fuel tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks JSG for the tip.

Does anyone know if it was just the 96 models or were there others under this recall? I am planning on calling the local stealer tomorrow and having them check HIN, but just curious in the meantime and.. I want a new tank(s) :D

Strizzo, that sounds like the dumbest most lame ass excuse for them not wanting to do the work. I hate stealerships...

Sweet, that's good to know, I will defiantly give them a call tomorrow then. I doubt my SPI or XP have ever been changed. Thanks!

I called BRP directly at 715-848-2520. After listening to the recordings, and one of the options eventually was recalls, I gave the fellow my HIN and he verified mine had been replaced in 1998. I also have a 96 GTI he checked on for me as well. It had been replaced too.

Thanks Tim. If I don't hear anything on Monday I'll give them a ring.

Last few parts are trickling in. Got the OEM shutoff vavle, VTS seal and the fuel filter o-ring. The OEM red start/stop button cover should be in tomorrow, dollar cheaper then the aftermarket ones, got it for $4.99 with free shipping. If I ever get to the machine shop to bead blast the carbs I can rebuild them got the rebuild kits and needle and seats. Then all that is left is a bit more clean up, final assembly, possibly a new fuel tank and recover the seat.

Having a heck of a time cleaning the handle bar cover. I know guys use the Ronsonol Lighter fluid, so I took the alternative which is -- Naphtha, and Ronsonol is supposedly pure naphtha. But knowing I would need way more than a few ounces to clean this pig I hit Lowe's and got a quart for $8.00. That would have gotten me one 8 oz bottle, so this was like buy one get 3 free! It did help but this thing is bad, I'm ready to bead blast it, it has seemed to work on every other part I wanted to clean up so far:D The right side use to look like the left. I have tried, gas, 99.9% Isopropol-Alcohol (the good stuff from McMaster Carr, not your cheap Drugstore water), Acetone, WD-40, Brake-Clean, Starting fluid, bleach, Castrol Super Clean and the list goes on. Somebody help a brotha out. I'm half tempted to install it and go to a vinyl graphics shop around the corner and have them wrap the darn thing in yellow vinyl.

I don't know if this makes a difference but I use (per Dr Honda), Zippo lighter fluid, it's the only thing that seems to touch the mold or mildew, or what ever the hell it is. Have you looked at the Black Tip neoprene covers? I used one on my 95XP 800, sorry I don't have a picture and the ski is put up for the winter.

From my research, Zippo is also Naphtha. I have looked at the BT covers, not available in yellow and to me personally the black just doesn't look right, I have a slight addiction to the color Yellow. If they had a yellow one, I'd be on it like stink on S... I was also thinking of buying a yellow wetsuit on Ebay and having my Mom stitch one up. Thanks for the suggestions Lou!

I come on this site everyday, and for about the last 2 weeks, Ive prayed and hoped to get some pictures of you backing this thing in the frigid PA water. Cmon racerxxx, dont let me down. You promised us this thing will be done this year. My poor little heart cant suffer sitting this whole winter not knowing if this project is done or not. And if you are a little afraid of the cold water, i would gladly allow you to pay my plane ticket to PA and I will let you know how it does on the water! Lol

Might be a little far fetched but what about sanding it with about 1200-1600 grit paper then painting it.

Have you tried Lacquer thinner? It's pretty strong stuff.

Yea, I kinda like the yellow too, in fact since I couldn't match the blue on my 96GSX I painted the handle bar cover and gauge cover yellow, it's the one in my avatar, somewhere behind Sheridan.

I used the Black Tip on my XP because the OE really messed the cover up, he tried to paint it black and I just couldn't get it to look right. I also like things original so when I get serious about restoring the XP I'll see if I can get an original cover from Nick.

Relax, there are 57 days left until January 1st. The problem I'm going to face is getting another person to go with me on another ski. Or getting my dad to take the Speedster as a chase vehicle, I trust my work, but you never know what gremlins could be hiding electrically. Oh, and then there is the trailer situation, I need two new tires, that's $70 bucks for them. I'l just toss another tag on it from one of my other trailers for now that has current registration. Checking on wunderground.com 2 weeks from now it's going to be 68 on a Monday and projects are wrapping up with work, soooooo. But alas, that is a pipe dream being two weeks out yet. Possible Nor' Easter on Wednesday/Thursday.

Perhaps I could talk the Mrs. into taking the kids to Disney(already know they would help me sell that deal). Oh and to save on air fare we can drive down(towing the XP, juuuuust in case);)

Sorry Lou, I can't see past her ASSets.

That yellow paint doesn't look too bad, there has to be something to nuke this mold.

I know you are going for the stock look but maybe you could do this

http://www.seadooforum.com/showthread.php?50393-My-handlebar-cover-fix-modification

But just paint it the same yellow, if you get one from a 97xp it doesnt have info buttons

I'd be down with that, there was just a super clean yellow one on Ebay---I mean CLEAN. Just trying to stay on a short leash with the ducketts right now. I spent a while on the thread the other day, it looks good! I need to sell some stuff to pump up my Paypal, that's like my disposable income, so I don't take from the house money.
