96 xp 800 impeller shaft problem

just bought a 96 xp and the impeller shaft is loose and slides back and fourth very easily as if its an inch too short i was wonderin if anyone had any ideas as to what could be the problem and how to fix it ive looked at my other 2 xp's and im missing the boot that is clamped to the pto and shaft but it doesnt seem like would keep the shaft from sliding any ideas

pull the pump

need to pull the pump, and install the rubber bumpers, at the ends of the driveshaft. Also, depending if its a bearing carrier design or the carbon ring/accordian boot, design, check to see if the metal c-clip or o-ring is under the steel collar.

^^^Yup exactly the problem...if it was like that a long time the driveshaft may be worn.

no the motor was just rebuilt and put back together so it hasnt even seen the water yet i just knew that it wasnt normal and was curious wat it was
