96 SPX replace entire engine or hopefully top end?

Needle bearings come packed in a sleeve I doubt anyone has ever counted them unless they messed up and dropped all omg them in the floor.

How do you guys remove your PTO? I bought the Chain wrench at harbor freight (the only one they have, the one where you put a 1/2" drive ratchet in to turn it) and it was about an inch or two short for the diameter of the PTO. The guy on the SBT tech tip vid makes it seem so common like " Oh, you take your chain wrench, turn it counter clockwise..." besides that HF one that DIDNT work, I cant find one ANYWHERE... Home Depot, Lowes, Advanced Auto, O'reilly's, AutoZone, Napa, Pep Boys.... I've only found rubber-like strap wrenches that wouldn't even come close to being big or strong enough.

Any ideas? looks like I can order one online for almost $200.00, id rather not..

Yea I've heard that it could ruin the splines, etc.but mine surprisingly wasn't too bad to get the flywheel off, so I'm assuming the PTO isn't too bad/rusted/seized on there.
 
I guess you could ruin the splines if you use an impact gun. But I use a 1/2" breaker bar and a 3' cheater pipe. Just keep steady pressure and it will pop. Easiest to do with the engine still in the hull but you can wedge a 2x4 between the engine and engine plate and chase it around the garage floor a few minutes but it will break free.

lol, you know me, I always HAVE to make things difficult for myself...engine is out of hull, and off of mounting plate. ive got a makeshift wooden bench so ill probably drill 4 holes and mount it to the bench:toetap05:

That chain wrench and a pipe wrench are deep back woods for PTO removal. It makes me cringe. On an XPL or HX you need the chain wrench but they also make a special one to work on those PTO's without the chain wrench.
 
yea from northern tool, it looks like the $54 one only straps up to 4 3/4" diameter and the harbor freight one for $6.99 straps up to 5", which still didn't fit the diameter of the PTO by like just a hair, so im assuming the $84 chain wrench from northern that goes 6 3/4" would work.
 
this ones coming off the 717 out of the blown spx. just taking my time, tinkering with this motor and breaking it down to nothing, so I can get a better understanding of these motors and how they work and are put together. Does anyone know the diameter/size of the PTO on this 717? I know they make different PTO's/weights, mine is the stock (I believe) one that has smooth curves at the edge, as opposed to the completely flat PTO that looks like a weight you put on a dumbbell.
 
I was going to get the one off of SBT for like $14. Racer, that one says for 580-587 will that exact one work for the 720?
 
They're all 140mm impellers the splines should be the same. As a matter of fact, I probably bought that one sooner than 96 when I broke the impeller on my old 89sp.

I got my a chain wrench from auto zone when I did my first ski a few years ago. It was the vise-grip type I think it was under $30.

Funniest thing I have read on here in a while, and it's so true.

I broke my impeller tool on my 787 PTO, and still couldn't get the PTO off.

Acetylene torch and an old driveshaft bent into an L with a 3' pipe ended up working but it wasn't happy.

I had to put a block of wood in the PTO cylinder to keep the crank from turning over. I tried the rope trick but still got the engine to turn over with 5' of rope in the cylinder.

And this is all on a freshwater engine.
