96 SPX No Power after starter came out on the water... please help!

Rear ebox is what holds the start solenoid and ignition coil on a 97 spx with the 787 engine. On yours, with the 717 engine you have everything in one box. So the fuses you found are all the fuses there is.

You won't get power to the gages without the mpem powering up. But since your 5 amp MPEM fuse is blowing right away that points towards the mpem being damaged by loosing the ground earlier.
The 15 A is only for the charging circuit and the 7.5 or 15 amp is only to power the VTS.

Here is one way to test it. Unplug all the wires on the mpem and only connect the black, red and red/purple wires. then connect the battery and pop in another 5a fuse, if it pop's you need an mpem. If it doesn't, you can start by removing the fuse and connecting the wires back up one at a time and replacing the fuse until it pop's again.

The idea behind this test is to only give the mpem power and ground. It should be happy just sitting there not doing anything. If the fuse pop's that mean's there is internal damage. Its actually just a diode that shorts out but still requires a replacement mpem to fix it.

Send the MPEM to Minnetonka4me he can test it. If it's bad he can sell you a quality used one

Lots of confusion being thrown out here. #1. 96 SPX is a 717 motor. No rear Ebox.

If the 5a fuse constantly blows unhook the VTS/trim unit and retry. If it keeps blowing, you need an MPEM.

If you bought a cheap chinese starter and it wont crank when you jump the solenoid....the starter is already bad.

I do have good used MPEMs in stock and ready to ship. PM me for more info.

The starter is definitely toast. i have already ordered a new one. In the meantime, I hook everything up, minus the starter and the 5 amp isn't blowing anymore. However my gauges are not reacting at all. To my knowledge, the battery, grounds, start button, and fuses are all good. Would the mpem be the only other thing standing in the way of getting power to the cluster? thanks

With the key off the post hit the start button, that should turn on the mpem/gauge. If not, run a temp ground from the battery to the ground post in the ebox and recheck. Also make sure the small red wires on the solenoid are on the same post as the big wire connected to the battery. If you do all this and the gauge will still not turn on your mpem is toast. Did you ever put a bigger fuse in the 5amp?

Now that you mention it, I did put a 7.5 in and it blew immediately. I'm guessing that was a bad idea...

never good...although usually it just quits blowing fuses b/c something else inside failed from too much amperage. I wouldnt think a 7.5 would do it but who knows.

Separate issue, but where did you order a starter? I'm hoping you did not but a 50$ eBay starter or a sbt starter

This one I ordered from Bay Area power sports $60 shipped from New York I believe. I have already gone thru an sbt and an eBay starter

I will try what you said previously and let you know but I don't have much hope left in this mpem

So I got the new starter in and tried this method. Unfortunately the 5 amp still blows immediately so I guess I'm going to get a new MPEM and try again.

There are some people that have tried to repair these with some success by digging out the board and replacing the diode that is likely fried.

Your best bet is to get a good one from @Minnetonka4me

While your waiting though, have a look at all the wiring and make sure that all the connections are good and that there are no shorts anywhere.

You need to go ahead and buy a starter from Nick as well. You will be replacing that crap Chinese Bay Area starter soon after you install the new MPEM

Mpem showed up today. Installed it and gauges work again. It even beeps twice when I put the key on now (never did that before). But if it's not one thing, it's another. The starter didn't turn. Took the starter out and bench tested it. It works. Hooked it back up in the ski and nothing. Just a faint clicking noise. I'm guessing it has to be a problem with the wiring. Does this sound familiar to anyone? :banghead:

Sounds like a cheap Chinese starter... Do you still have the OEM starter? If so, rebuild it!

Haven't had the oem starter since I got the ski. It works fine hooked straight to the battery, but not when the gray box is included in the curcuit. I'm going to check the solenoid tomorrow along with all the mpem connections

Jump the solenoid and see if it cranks. If so, it is either the solenoid and or the START/STOP button. It could be the feed from the MPEM, but not likely.
But again, jump the solenoid and tell us what happens. We can go from there.

I couldn't wait. Just went out and jumped it and it cranked, so getting a new solenoid tomorrow
