96 GTI, Can bad stator ruin the ignition coil?

I forgot to put plug in and hull filled with water over night. I got it back running again for several hours and then it died.
No spark condition.
I checked its mpem on another ski and it worked.
I checked its ignotion coil on another ski and it failed to produce spark. I made sure plug caps had continuity down to ignition coil by jabbing the wire. So I’m about 99.9% sure that it’s the ignition coil.
My question is this:
Can a bad or corroded stator cause an ignition coil to fail? Could it be sending a weak or continuous signal to the ignition coil? I’m about to buy a new ignition coil but how do I know it’s not going to be ruined in a few hours? I don’t understand how an ignition coil could fail from a little water getting into the computer box? It looks incredibly solid and has the black epoxy goo. It has definitely failed though.

Thanks
