96 gsx carb rebuild $1000??????!!!!!!!!!!

So I just pulled the carbs out of my 96 gsx was going to do it myself but would rather have it done right. The mechanic at the shop by my house said it was going to be 800-1100 bucks and he needs the carbs in the machine or he won't be able to have the ski run right ever again. he said rave valves and timing will be off. Just wondering if this makes sense to anyone else? Or maybe he was just over busy and didn't want to do a simple cheap job? The other places I called said they could do it for 90-200 bucks which seems more realistic they are just a couple hour drive away so I'd rather go to the shop in my home town. Any opinions and input would be helpful thank you!

Well the engine is all stock on mine, 100 bucks for 2 rebuild kits. 2 hrs later it was all finished. Set the carbs up just like the book said and it runs perfect. Never had to adjust them, so unless you have mods no need to have the ski in his shop. Unless you want to pay 400hr labor go somewhere else.

Your "mechanic" doesn't know his azz from a hole in the ground, timing and rave valves has absolutely nothing to do with carburetors, don't walk, run away from this guy as fast as you can. You can buy brand new carbs. for a lot less than the price he quoted.

I had never worked on a jetski before until a few months ago. It is not difficult to rebuild them if you follow the instructions here. I did it and my jetski is working like a champ. All the info is here, just search for it. If you are going to do it yourself, do yourself a favor and get a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) screwdriver from Amazon (Hozan D-332-100 JIS) about 10-25$ It will help you in not stripping the screws inside of your carbs. :cheers:

Local seadoo dealers here charge $600 for 2 carbs plus parts and local shops charge $400 plus parts. If I ever do a set for anyone I charge $250-300.

Lou is right, run away from this guy. He has no clue what he's talking about. I did the carbs myself on my GSX last year. Got the kits from OSD for around $100. It was fairly easy. Just go slow and easy. I wound up cracking a feed nipple on one of the carbs from man handling it but other than that it no issues. I've put about ~20 hrs on it since the carb rebuild and it runs like new. Plenty of vids on you tube of carb rebuilds. Watch a few vids before you do it and you will feel confident.

Get the mikuni's carb kits from minnetonka4me, he is here in the forum, he can hook u up and he is a very knowledgeable guy.:cheers:

Thank you every one I knew that guy was full of himself. My buddies father in law ended up taking them and doing them in an hour for$75. I already had the kits and everything I wish I knew about the screw driver before I dropped them off hahaha. That's the reason I wanted someone else to do them I fought like a banshee to get them screws loose without stripping them.

As others have said $1,000 is crazy, but let's remember he can ask anything he wants, it's up to the customer to decide if that works for them or not - free market and all. Maybe he really hates working on older seadoos.

I also think the shop that said they would do it for $90 is crazy, but again maybe they really LIKE working on older seadoos.

The father in law for $75 after you brought him the parts and carbs off, that's where it's at!

Complete rebuild for $250. Actually sounds pretty good. My dealer charged me $282 to screw the low speed and test it. Then gave it back running worse. Who in MN is the place to go to tune up an 01 XP for a decent price?

You can buy brand new carbs for less than 1000. Hell new novis are only. 1500 to 1800 depending iirc

Jimini, where about are you in Michigan? What lake do you use most often?

I use to charge $65 at my shop, and I didn't want to see the ski. If you know what you are doing... you rebuild on the bench, set the needles, and pop-off... and they will run spot on. All the owner needs to do is bolt them back on, and adjust the throttle cable.

You can buy new carbs for less and hen sell yours as many are looking for good rebuildable carbs.
