Hi all. I was having a great time with the boat when the driveshaft on the starboard ( driverside ?) engine spun in the PTO. I expect little setbacks like this are bound to happen. I thought I had it greased up enough , but it easily could have been near end of life when i bought the boat.

Now for the question part , is this the right PTO for my 1995 657X Speedster ?

or this ?

I'll be looking for a driveshaft as well , and probably a few more parts. I havent got it apart yet, as Im still out on vacation and the boat has since been towed home.
Thanks in advance .
Jim.

Thanks Tony ! I appreciate the advice back. Im going to keep bidding the ebay one and see where it lands. I might end up with both anyway.

So whats the standard list of parts I should get together when doing this job ? I figured the PTO , the driveshaft , and lip seals ....anything else ? Are the Left/Right driveshafts identical ?

Also assuming , Im going to have to pull the motor out ,right ?

no need to pull the motor, just sping the pto off, and replace with new, using some type of locktite, and rope down the cylinder hole, to get a good "tight/set" to pto on crank.

If you have any doubts about the wear ring or anything inside the pumps now is the time, and take a good look at those seal/bearing holders.

Ok , so maybe I'll pick up one of those " Cone kits" and pop the pump cone off , change the oil and change the o ring and seal while Im at it.
Thanks for the help Guys !

The Good, The Bad , and the UGLY

Yesterday I finally had time to pull the pump apart. The good news is the pump and shaft came out with relative ease. No gobs of RTV sealant to cut thru. The bad news is that the pump cone was filled with water , not oil , and I have no idea how long it went without lube. The UGLY part is that the lack of lube may have boogered up the impeller shaft , seal and bearings in addition to the driveshaft , PTO and carrier seals repairs.

So , I'm seeking advice here, how much "play" should the impeller have in the housing ? Should it spin freely and continue spinning if i give it a good hand turn ? I suppose Im going to tear it open and see if I need to replace all its parts as well.

"One of these things is NOT like the other."
I got my PTO hub in the mail. Its similar but not the same as the one I pulled out. Definately not the same diameter , and a bit less mass overall, BUT , the fit was the same so I went with it.
The old hub came out using the "rope in the cylinder" trick , and a pipewrench with a cheater pipe handle.
After close inspection and looking thru some pictures of torn down pumps online , I put the pump back together , changed the O ring and filled it with synthetic gear lube. The wear ring showed signs of scuffs inside but nothing more than surface scratches , no deep gouges.
The new driveshaft is on its way. Found online , $121 shipped. I should be able to get it all back together next weekend.
To be continued.

The PTO flywheel you bought is from a 587 motor. They are smaller and lighter. That engine will now rev up quicker.

Once again , one of these things is not like the other.

I am ok with interchangeable parts most of the time. This time , an obvious difference in parts that " will fit " your model , and " Are for" your model.
I spun the starboard driveshaft in the PTO hub , and destroyed the PTO hub. Ok , so i buy 2 PTO hubs , 2 driveshafts , 2 seals , and some misc. parts and get to work. I figured if I spun one the other was probably the same age. The issue begins with ordering from different people . One PTO hub i get is from a smaller engine . ( Chester helped me identify that one , thanks!) Mechanically , it works out the same , but has less mass overall, but didnt change much that I can see. The dimension of the spline depth was the same as what I took out.

One guy only has one driveshaft, etc.
The shaft that came out was beefy , much larger around than the one I got from a vendor. In addition the vendor model didnt have the same "cone" at the impeller end. They told me it "will fit" my model. True. It fit. But is it right ??
I feel like I bought something I shouldnt use. So now I have a driveshaft for an unknown model and have since gotten the proper (272000055) shaft for both engines.
Opinions ?

I got it all back together on friday , took it for a test run saturday and the boat ran really well. As expected the starboard engine revvd up faster than the port , but were equal overall. We took it out again on monday and had a good time. Other issues crept up , but I will address that in a more proper thread.
Attached are pictures of the shafts I received. The larger being the 055 shaft.
