So I have taken apart a '97 spx exhuast (water leak from those stupid plugs) and '99 spx (mounting bracket bolt broke).

Question - the manual shows a brass-washer (#39 in the parts manual) that needs to be installed between the lower piece of the exhaust and the main piece which is connected with that weird 'clamp-exhaust'. But both of these machines didn't have the brass-washer. And I know for certainty the '97 spx exhaust system has never been apart.

Can I just reinstall both of these using Gasket marker (ultra copper) and be fine?

Any suggestions on reinstalling this part of the exhaust system, steps, tips?

Thanks!

The ones I have pulled apart have always had the brass washer in them. At times they have been so covered with sealer you couldn't tell they were there. It may be okay to install without the brass in place, but if it were me, I would get the part so I would not risk having to pull apart the exhaust again.

huh maybe it is there, just figured it it wasn't there, didn't look like it just a kinda lip with lots of seal.

I just pulled mine too, and was thinking I didn't have the brass washer either, but there was a lot of red rtv and I was more concerned with getting the thing out at the time.

I wouldn't use the Ultra. Get the red RTV. Your copper gasket is there. Try not to bend it when removing. I put a lite coating of grease all around the inside of the big clamp. It will help it "slide" along the surfaces when being tightened and therefore the 2 pipes will stay in place and not pop away from each other.

Not going to remove it, clean and reinstall.

Really on the red over the ultra? I know the ultra holds up to higher temperature and more resistance of oil and gas, so would it really matter?

The reason I ask is cause I already have a tube of it.

your copper ring is probably in there, i pried mine gently out cleaned both pipes heavily and used the copper, no problems for me. I did replace the top pipe to manifold gasket as it was pretty beat.

Use the Ultra Copper sealant. Also, it helps to anneal the copper ring to soften it up.

Great thanks guys. I will clean them up and use the ultra copper, and a little grease in the bracket. Have a new gasket, just hope it goes together ok.

Do you tighten one end before the other, or tighten both sides and mounting bracket slowly moving from one to the next till everything is tight?
