Follow the manual as long as it is all stock, Seadoo knew what they were doing and the strange pop off and spring combos worked with the jetting. Make sure you reuse the OEM springs as the springs in the rebuild kits are typically not correct for the Seadoos and will yield the wrong popoff.

Awesome. Thanks. That is kinda what I was thinking too. It worked before why change it.

Yep, seadoo had some ridiculously high popoff pressures like 36-42 psi but it worked with the other settings on some models.

pop-off is highly dependent on the particular air box design due to resistance of air flow, there are many different air box designs. Thus, one model year may specify a much higher or lower pop pressure than the next model year.

BTW, you shouldn't run your ski at high loads or attempt to tune the fuel mixture unless the air box is installed, the air box resistance to air flow will have a large impact on the proper fuel mixture and the factory calibration was tuned for the air box.

So i got the carbs back together. Pop offs set at 17psi. Got everything bolted back in, connected, and back together. Put some XPS in the oil tank and some fresh gas in the tank with some premix in it. Went to fire it up and I think the starter went on me will turn over for about a second then the bendix kicks back. Starter spins fine but won't stay engauged. Is this a starter issue or should I look in another direction? It is an OEM starter. Is it rebuildable?

Yes, you will want to rebuild the OEM starter. I think LouDoo has the link to the parts needed. Does the engine turn over by hand?

Aftermarket starters are known to be low quality, like soft steel used to make the armature shaft and questionable permanent magnets, for instance. I'd rather rebuild an OEM otherwise the chances of disappointment increase.

Honestly have not tried to turn it by hand. Would the rebuild kit help keep the gear engauged?

I was just suggesting turning over by hand to make sure there was not something mechanical stopping the starter from turning the engine over.

I'm thinking the starter bendix clutch might be shot, do you have another to try? Also, when testing I would jump the starter solenoid using a screw driver just to rule out the possibility it may have an issue.

Oh ok. I don't think it is that. When I first hit the start button it spins over fast and fine for a second maybe two then it kicks out...starter still spinning though.

That is what I am thinking. Don't have another to try. I did try jumping it and made sure I had a good battery and good ground. Will the rebuild kits have the parts to fix the bendix?

They will not. You will want a bendix kit. The OEM kit comes with a spring and the c clip which will need to be replaced.

I do happen to have an oem one...ill have to look it up and make sure its for your model first though.

If it will work with mine let me know and how much you want for it

My money is on a weak starter motor(or one of the common causes, such as dead battery, corroded cable).

Inertia of bendix at t=o, the starter motor spinning up pushes the bendix into the flywheel. This doesn't keep it there though, torque transfer keeps the teeth engaged.

So, if the starter motor doesn't produce torque properly(for whatever reason) the torque drops off and there isn't enough force to keep the return spring compressed.

Or, the bendix sprag clutch might be slipping thus torque drops off (doubtful, IMO).

Well I may try to rebuild it first before the bendix kit. Everything looks and seems to be ok with the bendix. The brushes on the other hand look like they have seen there better days.

This sounds a lot like what i had going on with the one in my XP. It would engage for a second or two, then it was like the bendix was free spinning. I bought a brush rebuild kit from EBay for $18, and put 20 minutes of work into it, and had a basically new starter. New ones from the dealership were $300.

I thought about buying up all of the used, broken starters that I could this winter and rebuilding them. There seems to be a decent market for people who can't or don't want to rebuild them. But, house that I'm renting is up for sale, so I don't want to get into it too deeply until I find my new place. They aren't nearly as hard to work on as I thought they might be. :-)

So I got the starter rebuilt finally. Bolted back on tonight. Dropped a good battery in it and hit the start button. Motor would turn over great. After trying for several minutes to start it and nothing, noticed a rookie mistake. So I turned the fuel to the on position and tried again. Choked it and it fired right up. Bogged for a good bit but then cleared all the oil out. She has nice snappy throttle response. But it was late so couldn't really run it. Can't wait till the 6" of snow in the drive way melts so I can roll it out and put it on the hose for a minute or two. And maybe if it gets above freezing here take it for a quick test spin. If all goes well then on to the cosmetics

Nice job! The lake has some ice on it here and there, not gonna splash the boat till mid-late April most likely. Looking forward to another nice summer, might see ya out there.

Enjoy the new old ski! :)
