I have known two people with newer jeeps, though they were the liberty and not the Cherokee. One had a crank go bad because the metal they used in that 3.7 was too soft and it ended up spinning a bearing. Hopefully you would not run into anything that serious. The other had dump little issues with the window rollers and switches going bad inside. The 2.4 has been around a long time from the stratus to the srt4, pt cruiser, etc. I love the style and look of the jeep line, I'd say, if you love it then go for it. But do everything you can to make sure you are covered with the warranty, maybe sell it when it gets close to the end.

That being said, I still would not be caught dead in a Toyota, or Nissan......

not the same, this is a multi air 2.4 eng ............

also, there is no soft metal problem in a 3.7 or the 4.7 .... no crank issues at all

Believe it or not, the new Cherokee is quite capable off road. I had a chance to play with one while on vacation the other week. Beach, mud roads, some minor rock stuff. I liked it, and I've been around off road vehicles my entire life. I enjoyed the new Cherokee experience. I knew going into it that it was a Cherokee in name only, and was pleasantly surprised.
My local dealer says he has one with the eco diesel in it on the lot. I may have to swing by and see if that's true. I've been thinking that the wife needs a better vehicle for the winter, as she's had to take my truck into work quite a bit lately due to snow. Plus that would give us a vehicle better suited to exploring off road. My truck is too big for that stuff. I have no issue with the jeep/dodge/ram lines. My last two trucks have been Rams and have been relatively trouble free, including the '09 Ram (first year of the fourth gen rams) which now has 150 000 Km's on it.
As for someone not wanting to drive Toyota trucks, the locals were all driving lifted Tacomas and were kicking ass.

If you end up getting it, keep us posted on how it does.

it`s all good, I run a modded FJ Rig, even the Jeeps wave hello, ! The vehicle doesn`t make you the person behind the wheel, well maybe some.:lols::cheers:

when I`ve had as many different vehicles in my life time and lived thru the ups and downs of the Big 3, it`s whatever makes you warm and fuzzy for the years you have that ride!

I do miss my old American muscle, that`s for sure!

Well guys, I did decide to get the Cherokee after all and will provide updates on performance. So far the little I have driven it, I really like it.

Did not see that coming:driving: LOL... Most of the time if you take it home for an extended test drive, it stays in the driveway!

Good luck and congrats! Pics??

Basically the same, the 2.4 multi air just has a different valve train from what I understand.... I doubt they have changed the rest of the engine a whole bunch.

The crank issue, I don't have any documentation to back that up, its just what he heard, could have been a rumor....

I hear ya, the big three have struggled over time and don't have the best rap. But I'd like to think they are making a come back, we will see... ;) glad you are enjoying your cruiser though..
Jake congrats on your purchase!

WHAT!!! THATS NOT A REAL JEEP. THATS CHRISLER'S BASTARDIZATON OF A CHEROKEE !! it doesn't even have a real frame !

Ok, that was just a jab, and not to be taken seriously. but Jeep guys never like change. We heard the same stuff when they dumped the CJ's... and then again when the TJ came out.

Lets face it... Less than 1% of the Cherokee's would be used as anything more than a daily driver. So why build it heavy? a heavy vehicle just means more fuel burnt.

Ok... I'm really not trying to be negative, but I hate to see opinions that are extreme when there isn't enough knowledge to know.

FYI.... I was one of the guys who developed the 8.8 swap for the TJ.

Haha! Notice I didn't say real jeep.....just real Cherokee. Granted the older Cherokee was pretty BA. At least this one still had solid axles and a decent platform for Modding.

Jeep is so far from what jeeps should be it's not even funny. Even the wrangler has taken a wicked wrong turn. Bet next major release it'll have ifs. :(

hahahaha, yeah people keep saying I have a Fake Jeep! bwahahahaha :lols: It hasn`t let me down yet! and no Death Wobble.

here`s a pic, from when it was lifted. I guess my Vitara was also a Fake Jeep, but it was narrow enough to go intbetween the trees and with 5:09 gearing could climb a nice muddy hill on the jobsites... :lols:

Stop this madness!

This thread reminds me of my long-lost, rust-free '65 Scout AWD with full-floating Dana 4.88's, front sprag+manual lock hubs, a carbed 231 Buick + TH350 (an automatic is never in the wrong gear), and a Saturn overdrive in the iron case Dana-20 PTO. Fold down front windshield, custom stainless steel full width cattle guard with winch fairlead with winch just inside grill, full 1/4" (5/16"?) belly plates, safari sliding windows, 32" Wranglers on stock springs. The fluid in the windshield washer tank would often dribble from the nozzles onto the windshield while climbing granite cliffs.

Can't believe I ever "abandoned" that thing for a new '95 Bronco, although the Bronco is nice and still has less than 35k miles on it, this was a big mistake. That Scout is now worth far more than the Bronco, despite the Bronco is no slouch. Not a 9-speed, it's just a 4 speed auto, but at least the Bronco's transfer case isn't electric-shift and the hubs are manual.

Although i'm currently a Dodge owner, I've owned a number of Toyota's in the past, and Lexus, and honestly there is really no comparison in overall quality, Toyota win's hands down. I was shopping for a Toyota/Lexus SUV when I stumbled across a Durango for about 1/3 of my budget so I said, "oh hell, why not", and although I like the vehicle, I don't love it, I kind of regret not just holding out for the import alternatives which I consider MUCH more reliable overall than any american counterparts. If my dodge hadn't been ridiculously under my budget, It never would have been even given consideration.

I can't imagine anyone saying "wouldn't be caught dead in a Toyota or Nissan", I've literally bought Toyota's with 80K miles and considered them just getting broken in, i'd never feel that way about a Jeep, ever...

BEST fake jeep I ever owned was my Suzuki Samurai. Bought it new and chopped the hinges so I could slide the doors on/off just like the CJ-7 I had back in the 80's did. Used to take that little Suzuki out to Montauk on the beach every weekend in the summer and it never let me down. Had a nice Warn winch ont he front but never got stuck to use it! I miss that ride

I loved it when their was site working going on the job sites, during my lunch I`d climb those mud mountains with the Vitara...

that was a great local travel rig, had to get rid of it when my commute started to exceed 100 miles each way. it just wasn`t highway friendly, took every bit of it`s torque to keep highway speeds even with the 5:09 gearing...
Now the FJ, although it loves to drink fuel, it does everything I need it for and tows the boat well!... It is more a DD driver now and in a more tame trim...

Had a samurai when I was in my teens. Jeep guys used to laugh at my "fake jeep. " I loved that thing, except in snow. Fat tires and no weight made for a lot of interesting accidental 360's on the highway. I remember the interior being caked in a sheet of mud for years.

the new 2.4, the multi air 2.4 is nothing like the old 2.4 at all, the old one had a timing belt, this engine is chain driven

Sorry I missed this thread.

Well my 6 month old Jeep Cherokee with 3,000 miles on it bit the dust today. Wife went shopping with it and called and said when she started it to come home SERVICE TRANSMISSION message came on and it would not go into gear. After several attempts she said it went into gear and she limped it home, kept going out of gear at stop signs, she said she was going up a hill and it went out of gear and actually started to roll backwards. She made it home safe. Jeep has been flatbedded to the dealer, awaiting a report tomorrow. What sucks is we were headed to Georgia on Friday. I'm telling Chrysler I want them to pay for a comparable rental vehicle (SUV) for 2 weeks for our trip. So far they are offering to pay only $35/day for a rental...

Update: The dealership just called and said they are ordering a new transmission for my Jeep. So the couple of you dying to say "I told you so", feel free...

I've read the 6-speed trannys are shaky, Chrysler delayed production due to the issues. Reminds me of the early 2000 Dodge pickups that most owners got stuck like roasted pigs putting reman trannys in.

I'm kinda surprised the PCM was actually able to self-diagnose, I guess they got that part working, eh? Usually a stop/tail light bulb being out or something bizarre like that will cause tranny codes to pop up?

BTW, I do my own oil changes, don't trust anyone touching my junk.
