I have known two people with newer jeeps, though they were the liberty and not the Cherokee. One had a crank go bad because the metal they used in that 3.7 was too soft and it ended up spinning a bearing. Hopefully you would not run into anything that serious. The other had dump little issues with the window rollers and switches going bad inside. The 2.4 has been around a long time from the stratus to the srt4, pt cruiser, etc. I love the style and look of the jeep line, I'd say, if you love it then go for it. But do everything you can to make sure you are covered with the warranty, maybe sell it when it gets close to the end.
That being said, I still would not be caught dead in a Toyota, or Nissan......
