2003 GTX 4-TEC S/C top speed problems

Some time about a week ago, I noticed it would only top out at around 51 MPH. I did some probing and found the intake grate had been broken into little pieces. I went and bought a WORX single scoop intake grate and installed it as per manufacturer's instructions. Now, it topped out at 52 MPH. My major concern: It used to top out at 63 MPH. Where the hell are my extra 11 MPH?
 
The RPM is the same as it would usually be. 7,200, I think? Also, when we first got it, the impeller was slightly damaged and the wear-ring needed to be replaced. Even then, it still topped out at 63 MPH. After replacement and repair, 63 MPH. I'm totally blown away...
 
The supercharger? No. The only things that have been rebuilt or replaced have been the impeller and wear ring. The supercharger still spools up just fine from what I can hear. A boost gauge would be cool, but impractical.
 
what do you have for hours on the ski? The s/c are notorious for all sorts of speed related issues, Especially on pre 2008 models. Pull off the intake hose that goes to the S/c and stick your fingers in there and try to spin the impeller. You shouldnt be able to spin it freely. It should be stiff.
 
the 2003 GTX SC doesn't have ceramic washers in the clutch, it has metal, but they wear out at 50-100 hours.

sounds like a sc problem. 51-53 is the magic speed when the sc goes. takes 2 minutes to check.

the opas had issues on those as well where they would stick in the down position and lower top end.
 
So if the supercharger impeller spins freely, the supercharger needs to be rebuilt?

Hell yes. I think you should also have them check and piece back all the ceramic washers to make sure nothing is floating around.

If it spins freely, your slip washers are slipping all the time. Yours does not have ceramic washers if it is painted red, black ones have the ceramic washers in 04 and later, and a full rebuild of the sc may not be necessary. It is simple to just replace your slip washers and replacement hardened metal ones are readily available.
 
A quick and simple way to check your supercharger is start it up. Reach back and squeeze the hose coming out of the center of the supercharger (U shaped hose) rev the motor. If the S/C is good it will start blowing your grip apart. If it does not your S/C is bad.
