2001 GTX RFI help NEW project engine binds up??

Hello everyone got the ski home today owner says it was seized. Took cover off PTO pulled plugs sprayed fogging oil down cylinders and was able to spin engine by hand. Ok great , hooked battery up to it shows 170 hrs on it. Cranked it over with starter so far so good, put compression gauge on it cranked went couple of times and is now frozen. What would be my next step? Pull pump?? Thanks why is it jammed up ? It will move a little if bump with starter not at all by hand.
 
Seized crank or debris in the bottom end.
Also blown lower connecting rod bearing would do that.

Pull the head and look for pitting on one cylinder or another.

Also try turning the engine backwards.


The other possibility is the starter bendix is falling apart and jamed sideways.
Turning the engine backwards sometimes dislodges it.
 
so when you took the compression tester back off and try and turn it over with the starter again is it still locked up, or will it turn freely?

sounds like you need to pull the engine but we will see.
 
Took off tester tried to turn by hand no good forward or backwards. Bump with starter it would moved slightly, maybe starter Bendix jamming it up?
 
If you yank the motor be sure to remove the pto from the crank first otherwise it is a PITA :cheers:
 
I would be pulling the pump before I messed with pulling the engine or flywheel cover since it needs to come out anyways to pull the engine.
 
Three things can lock up the engine/power plant. Jet Pump bearings, starter stuck engaged, or an engine issue. If it will not spin by hand or with the he starter, remove the pump first as it is easy and it will need removed anyways if you have an engine issue. Then the starter. Try to spin by hand after the pump is removed and then the starter..
 
Got it home pulled plugs spun by hand did complete rotations a few times, put battery in it cranked a little , put compression gauge on it got maybe a half of crank and that was it gauge read 75. Going to pull pump give it a once over and see if free engine up. Then starter think thats where the problem is, are they known to bind up an engine?? Anything in front cover cause a jam?? Thanks guys
 
Next step to pull RV cover....? If its not the pump then it has to be internal, dosent seem like a top end would cause wierd lock up issues.
 
You are on the right track then,, Pull the cover and if that is not it, pull the pump. Still locked up, pull the starter,,, If still locked up, then it is the engine.
 
Rotary valve. (Thing after the throttle body)
google seadoo 787 rotary valve. Or check the manual for the pictures and description of parts.
 
Got it . Thanks very little knowledge on the valve as far as timing and what not, but aware one is in there cool
 
You should be fine as an auto mechanic. They are very basic but just download the manual and follow it step by step. The sealants are different too.
 
Hi getting ready to tear into rebuilding this machine. which would be the best way to go? its been sitting for a few years so fill with gas and oil try to get it running OR tear it down and rebuild engine the way it looks its never been apart 107 hours on it. thanks fourm
 
Hi All got time to work on the 01 GTX so far I have pulled the starter, its good. Pulled the Pump. pump spins freely. so guessing engine has something jammed in it still does not turn over. So where do i go from here? tear down my self? will a huge set of automotive tools be ok or do i need sea doo special tools, send off to local shop did my other ski 717 engine $1400 complete with new crank rebuild carb, i pulled engine and cleaned all parts. used engine?? not sure here. With engine comming out is there any mandatory parts that should be replaced?? Alot of questions here you guys have been really helpful thanks
 
Starter is out looks fine, pulled jet pump spins free, guess I'm looking at an engine tear down
