Hey guys, first time poster. Don't own a ski but considering. Had a question for the brain trust:

I found these beauties on CL near my home town.
http://orlando.craigslist.org/boa/3678314524.html

If the add is gone, I'll give you a description: 2 96 GTi's, on trailer, no engines. Vinyl looks pretty torn up.

Two questions:

One, if you (meaning someone who knows a lot more than me) were evaluating these skis for purchase what's a basic checklist of items to look for/at? With skis in this condition are there any serious deal killers in your mind?

Two, I saw rebuild 717s online for about $800. Aside from that how much else would you expect to spend? (I know, a LOT of variables. Humor me) Could you put in a larger motor, if so, how much larger?

Thanks......

Offer 400 for everything.

The skis are worth nothing but parts.
Once you do everything to get it running, you'll spent close to twice a running one will cost you.

Non running skis are worth 100 bucks especially in condition where everything has to be redone!

1) with NO motor's its really worth the trailer value + 200 tops... so realistically around $600 is pretty much spot on...

a) i'd like to know if the electronics are there, or if those were pulled with the motors, same goes for things like steering cables, carbs, throttle cables, gauges, trim, etc.... LOTS of stuff could be missing.

yes a bigger motor could go in, but if you can get a 717 cheap, no reason to upgrade, (lack of mpem's might impact that decision, but its not just bolt it in and go, so IMO stick with 717's, they'll be fast enough)

2) my assumption would be between $400 and $1200 in extra misc... so much depends on how much is missing inside.. motor mounts, exhaust, yada yada, pics of the inside would help...

and as others will confirm, you can get nickle and dimed to death with projects like this assuming you don't have a garage full of misc ski stuff, nuts bolts, washers, etc, all that can add up to delays, additional costs, frustration.

I would NOT tackle this project if its your first... this is the type of project for the semi experienced, to very experienced shade tree mechanic that has a whole bunch of 717 parts laying around where he/she can finish the project without all kinds of hassle.

you might be better off with a running ski, thats similar, that will cost between 800-1000 tops, no hassle,, until it breaks..

most rebuild engines dont have starters on them
carbs are probably missing
exhaust could be missing up to the water box
plus new batteries for both
also wont know if the skis will run with the electronics in them
lot of hidden unknown money in these

agreed most likely both skis are part outs

unless mpems are there, not much left to part out really... a couple of seized up pumps most likely... :(

most of the value is in the trailer there...but even a crap double trailer still sells for a minimum of $300-$350 here in FL, unfortunately even the decent to nice trailers still only sell for about $450. a LOT of sellers THINK their trailers are worth $600 but they never sell in FL for that price (ask me how I know this lol)

FYI alot of those online rebuilts you have to have a core or they charge you like andother 500-1000 buck keep that in mind

Too bad, because if these ski's weren't neglected they could have been nice ski's. They even have the touring seats.

I'm pretty much in agreement with the other guys, that unless they have rebuildable engines they're worth pretty much nothing. They would be hard to even part out, unless you're in the business and have someway to test the parts. I hate to be so negative but even the trailer looks trashed.

Lou

I just noticed, these ski's have been through a Colorado winter since the pics. were taken.

looks like florida ski's... orlando craigslist... not that it changes much.. just ants :)

smc, I'll take it! :D

Sounds like what you all are saying is don't touch them with a ten foot pole. I hear ya.

Oddly enough, these are on CL as well in this area:
http://orlando.craigslist.org/boa/3729203081.html

From reading on this forum sounds like he's asking a little much for them though, but still a much better deal than the skis I mentioned earlier. What would you guys offer for these other units?

I appreciate you all taking the time for this. I'm currently a pilot out in Denver and may have a lead on a gig back in FL. We'll see. This is all very long term thinking that I wish wasn't so long term.

I sold two gti w/o trailers recently.
One went for 1050 and 2nd went for 1250. Look at picture in my avatar.

Those are overpriced by ~500 if skis are turn key which they are not.
Batteries alone are $200

Plus changing grey fuel lines to newer ethanol friendly.
Also go through carbs since ski has been sitting. Ea ski has two so thats 4 rebuild kits at 50 bucks ea. plus 300-400 in labor.
Then inspect wear ring and bearing in pump is another 100+ bucks.

I keep keep going and going..........

Avoid scams, deal locally! Do NOT wire funds (Western Union, Moneygram). Beware cashier checks, money orders, shipping, non-local buyers/sellers. More info

Fellow aviator here too!

When they say it hasnt ran in two years always gets me.... was it winterized (antifreeze added and fogged, fuel run dry in the carbs) in FL this is unlikely and usually means headaches... Water in the engine and exhaust just sitting and corroding the internal passages, engines locked up due to slight surface rust on the cylinder walls, and carbs gunked up with gelled ethanol.

Unless they both run perfect with 150 in each hole, no grey fuel lines and great water tests, I wouldnt even look twice for that kind of cash. For $3500 you can have my 97 GTi and the 96 GTi, on separate single trailers :)

I think smc is trying to sell me something...... ;). You fly professionally or just for fun?

ocod: you know, one letter away from your sn is OCD, so your response is appropriate. ;). But if I read you right those two skis are a better project for someone like myself not afraid to download the service manual off the net and learn something. So in a hypothetical purchase show them maybe $1800 cash and see what shakes loose?

I went to college for it but ran out of money to finish flying, so my bachelors in aviation management is doing great as I repair commercial and industrial generators all day. I make good money so I cannot complain. But the highest license I have is my Instrument private pilot. Commercial is next after we buy a house.

And yes, Im trying to sell you something because the wife will kill me when we pick up the RXT-X tomorrow and I havent listed any of my skis that intend on selling.... FYI in my signature they are all up for grabs except the RXT-X, (mine) GTXL, (hers) and GSI (not ready). All come on single trailers. :)

Ha, as much as I love it I'd say save your money my friend. If you're married, with a house, and thinking about kids it'll be hard to build yourself up into decent money while having to support your life. That said if she's got an income there's some interesting gigs up there. I've got family about halfway between Boston and Manchester so I try to pay attention to different positions that come open in the area just in case.

And I'd be buying if I were in FL now, but alas, NH is a bit far away. ;)

Ok I'll bite how much for which one. Lol I need another ski like a hole in my head right now. But I'm always looking.

That would be a very good deal.

SMC has his which is a 96. Different seat and mirrors on hood and position of reverse with storage bin in the front.
Also, hahahahahaahahaah SMC. I saw thread where you got deal at place you know for the RXT-X.
Lets hope wife still lets in house. Show her this thread to show her your trying.
:toetap05:

Flyer,
Are you here now to make offer?

You need to go w/battery and compression gauge.
If motors turn free and 150 compression then your talking.
The rest is cosmetic and need of serious maintenance

If engines are toast price goes to $100. The engine is over a grand w/o labor if you do it yourself plus another $500 or so on other things.

Look up SUKE restro thread. See where before and after takes you.
Also check out JETSKIGOODIES restro threads.

All you need to know for Seadoo is right here or the free downloadable service manual or become a member here for even more one on one.

Unfortunately I'm not in a position to purchase those skis now as I'm still in CO. But the questions were general enough that I thought they could benefit other noobs out there. I did grow up in FL and have been in and around the water a lot. If I made it back there and owned a ski I'd probably be in Ponce Inlet a lot. ;)

One more question: I'm familiar with compression from having been around airplanes a lot, you pull a spark plug, thread in the gauge, then turn the prop and see how much pressure the cylinder will hold. On a PWC, what do you use to turn the crankshaft?

Same just hold throttle open. That's why I said you bring 16xx battery fully charged to test it.
No one ever has a good battery
If you hear two beeps when you the put key on DESS(kill switch) then your good. No beeps, check for lights on gauges to tell you if MPEM good.
If when you hit start button nothing happens asking to remove white box to the left of gas tank.
Open it and tell him you will see sparks when you jump the solenoid.
:o

If it works to crank over, get reading on ea cylinder.
If it doesn't work then starter is bad and no way to test compression.

Only thing left is make sure engine not seized. Turn PTO(round thing that transfer power to driveshaft). It will be under grey cover held on by two wing nuts. one on ea side.
If it spins freely. Pray it has 150 and not under 90-120(will not last or run well under load).
