Opinions on 02 GTIs?

Looking for a pair of jet skis for an upcoming trip. I'll be surprised if they get used more than 4-5 times a year and I doubt I'd keep them more than a year or two. Speed is not too important to me, my kids are young, they'll be thrilled riding with me at 40 mph. Must be 3 seaters though (this will save headaches about whose turn it is!) In the past week I've come across 2 pairs of 02 GTIs that look to be in really good shape. Each set (different sellers) is listed at $4000 for the pair and double trailer. I'm ok with 2 strokes, it's all I know in the atv world. Is this model a fairly reliable one? Is this price a fair one? Anything I should check if I go look at them (one set I think I'll be able to test ride, the other likely would be hose hookup only)

I have an 02 GTI, purple right? They have a 717 engine which many will say is underpowered for the bigger hull, and it is, but still enough power to be enjoyable. They have some type of noise suppression, It surprised me when I test drove mine, it was so quiet, in the water anyways. Louder on land. 717’s are a reliable engine, my favourite engine because of this and there simplicity. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Firstly 4000.00 for 2 and a double is a fair price but at that price you should be allowed to water test them, a lot of issues won’t show themselves unless the machine is in the water.. so if your there cash in hand, your happy with the machines, willing to make the purchase, even put a small 50.00 deposit and the seller won’t let you water test them, I would walk away for 4000.00. These machines are very stable, I am 225 pounds and can stand with both feet in one foot well without it tipping. When water testing, look for ease of starting in the water, should just be able to pull the choke and start in a second or 2 max. First, take a 1 minute ride with the seat off to look for any leaks, after putting the seat back on, take for a 10 minute ride minimum, longer if allowed. At the end of the ride, shut it off and try to start it again while it’s still in the water, should start right back up, if it doesn’t it can be a sign of a worn rotary valve cover or even low compression. After the ride, take a compression test 120 is time for rebuild, 150 is new. The oil tanks have a seam at middle height which normally leak and need replaced with a seamless tank, if there is oil in the hull it could be from here or the grommets on the bottom of the oil tank tend to leak as well, if the small oil lines coming from the carb to the intake have white thick paint on them that is flaking off then they are original and should be changed, if the fuel lines are grey then they should be changed as well.. mine came with the OPAS flaps on the hull removed with no issue. I think it was fairly common for people to remove them, might as well operate the reverse bucket while in the water as well. I would think the 02 and newer GTI’s would have a better resale value than older hull design 3 seaters. Also while you are riding look that the pisser is working, a small stream of water should be coming from it, can’t remember exactly where, I think out the port side under the rub rail but I could be wrong. Anyways you can see it by looking around while driving. Make sure it has the original fuel filter/seperator, original air intake which I’m sure it will have. Not molested. 2 beeps when you put the key on says the beeper is working, if you don’t here it and the machine runs then it’s just the beeper that needs replacing. Give the engine a little shake on land to be sure no bed plate bolts have worked their way loose. Not a bad idea to put a volt meter on the battery while running on land, volts should be somewhere close to 12.8 at idle and 13.4 at 4000 rpm. Great family machines

Yes these are the purple ones. Thank you for the very detailed reply! I've been watching for about 6 months and haven't seen too many GTI's so this is very helpful. I think my research on price in my area is that a running pair of 2 strokes for $3000 sells in about a day, at $4000 it may last longer and I assume when it does sell some negotiating was done on them. I'll take my time and see if any negotiating can be done before the long drive. It's good to know these are very stable machines and I really don't need them to do 60mph or accelerate crazy fast. If I can come to a pending agreement on price, I'll follow your tips for checking them out on the water.

Keep in mind the difference in condition between a pair on a double for 3000.00 and the same for 4000.00 could be substantial. You may save a 1000.00 but they could need more than that in repairs. I would start by looking for quality

Agreed, I'm not looking to sink $500 in repairs in them right away or perhaps worse, just have them never look or function as nicely as a clean set to start with. Photos can be deceiving, but so far this set for $4,000 seems to in as good of condition as can be expected. I'd definitely rather have an immaculate set of skis than save $ on ones that never will be immaculate again.

Do you happen to know how they would do towing a tube or knee board? I'm talking towing a single 6-12 year old at 20 mph tops. My kids love "water sports", but not in the same way I did where my dad floored it and tried to kill me. Thinking if I could take them on short rides away from the pontoon in a cove and give the rest of the group a break it would be helpful to the adults.

It will tow no problem. Yea, I grew up the same way. I was probably 7 or 8 years old and my grandfather would just set me on a horse and give it a slap in the ass lol. Things were different then growing up than now.
