Hi there,
I have a problem with my 1999 GTX.
The Battery is good and all fuses are ok.
When I put the Key on there is no result, no beep, no gauge!
(When I short the starter it turns over fast, so Battery is good"

When I checked the Fuse I saw that tere is 12V between + socket of the "ACC" Fuse and + sockets of the other Fuses?!?

What is acc for, and why is the Polarity changed? Is my mpem Faulty?

Cheers Dan

Does your GTX have a small ground wire that hooks up to the battery along with main engine negative power cable? If not, take a look and make sure there isn't one laying in there not hooked up. Usually connects in the rear E-box with with coil/starter solenoid, etc. Thats where the MPEM gets its main ground on many models.

If thats not the case, what was going on leading up to this problem? Did it happen of the blue? rollover, jump start, etc?

Check all of your connections, This problem will happen if the wires going into the rear ebox or coming in to the MAG/Stator housing are ever so slightly unplugged. What happens if you press the start button five times in a row? If you have VTS does it function?

Hi there,
Tanks for fast answering.

1. there is no "small ground wire". But when I take a look to the wiring diagram I see a ground wire. Where is it connected usually?
When I measure between red and black at the mpem con 1 I have 12volt as well as on the fuse sockets to ground

2. There is no vts, and no beep after push start/stop 5 times.

Cheers dan

A couple of things, it's probably not going to make a difference but try connecting the small ground wire to the - battery terminal instead of engine ground.

Check the 5 amp. fuse on the MPEM.

Have you jump started your ski from a running vehicle?

If all else fails send your MPEM to Nick Minnetonka4me, he can test it, if it's bad he can sell you a good used one at a reasonable price.

Lou

I have the 96 GTX model ski....THERE is a second small ground wire leading to the battery terminal.

ah shoot I just saw your second post about that you found it.

I once had the same problem, and it was a loose connection in the front Ebox....check them all for tightness. Squeeze them together a bit if you find a loose one.

By the Way, please remember I have pos.& neg at the mpem.
At the fuse sockets I can measure 12volt on all fuse to ground. Only the 3A acc socket seems to be reversed! This means I can measure 12v to pos. battery connector?!?
What is this fuse for?
I checked all plugs and sockets, everything fine and not corroded?
When I insert the 15A fuse in the rear box there is a small spark, so it seems that something works, or consumpt energy without working?!?

Cheers dan

I hate to ask again, but what happened prior to it not working? or did you buy the ski this way?

I am not familiar with the 99 GTX specifically, but I can tell you most of these skis have a lot of grounds, My 02 RX has the main ground on the engine block, then a lighter gauge ground wire on the engine block, then another on the battery. why the last two couldn't have been together in the harness, I have no idea. you might be getting a false voltage reading at the mpem if its picking up a ground through all the other sensors & accessories. Its possible anyway.

Makes sense that you get those voltages.
That 3a acc is not powered untill the mpem is switched on.
So you are actually getting a ground there because whatever that fuse goes to is acting like a load which gives you a ground when measured from there to positive.
But with the mpem powered up you would get voltage there just like everything else.

Measure there to ground and then hit the start button to see if you get a momentary source of power.
Sound s like a dead mpem but try and eliminate everything else first.
What about the wiring from the start button. What about the wiring from the dess post... if you feed the mpem power attach a beeper and cross the wires for the start button you should hear at least a chirp. If not id send the unit to Nick just to see.

when you say plugs and sockets ....do you mean the connectors between 2 wires in the Ebox. They (metal capped ends) slip into a clear plastic tube like covering to protect them.
I found my problem to be the very first one on the red power cable. It wasn't a tight fit so it would wiggle loose and I would get no power at all whatsoever.

Hi, sorry for delay!
The jet was winterized two years ago in good working condition. It was starting good by its own battery, so there was No need to jump start or charge.

In winter the battery was seperated. Now it is absolutely dead. No sign if work.
I was wondering there is no ground on pin 17 at the mpem. This is connected to ground on the rear box? Is pin 17 switched in the mpem so that the coils are pos&neg switched of when the mpem is off?

I tried to connect the coils to ground on a separat wire, but maks no difference. Everything is dead.
The wire to pin 17 is good, I have ground on it when I short it in rear box

Thanks for help
Dan

Ok, I looked at a 99 GTX schematic, as I assume you are too?
It looks like you should have a common ground on #17 plug three, like you mentioned.
Then it looks like there's another on pin #24 on the same plug three.
And lastly pin#2 on plug two.

12V power on pin#26 plug three (from the 15A fuse at the start solenoid)

With the harness's unplugged from the Mpem, can you check all those grounds & 12V+ with an old school test light, or something similar so it puts a load on the wires? I have bad connections test good with a multimeter & then disappear with a load.

If all that checks out good, put the lanyard key on and see if you have a closed circuit between #7 & #15 on plug #2 with your meter. You should, & it should also open when you remove the key. (its just magnetic reed switch in the post) If that also checks out, you just might have a bad mpem.

I would never be quick to condemn one, so by all means keep trying things. seems odd that it worked when you put it away.

Yup if you get to your wits end I can def check it on my bench tester and let you know 100%. If its dead I can sell you a replacement and program your keys (you send when I test your other one) to save you a few bux getting keys you dont need.

reverse polarity usually makes the 5amp blow, but Ive had MPEMs have good fuses but not work.

Make dang sure the connector coming out of the rear ebox isnt corroded. I find it all the time.

Hm, seems to be mpem!
There is no ground connected on 2/2

Dess key and base seems to be worjing

Let me know if you want to send it in to verify 100%. If its fine I charge $20, if you buy a replacement MPEM from me and it is bad there is no charge.

now Im confused?!?

I seperate the mpem from the Bracket to check all pins! It is a 278001399.
After checking all Pins I put i in again and connect it. (But didnt fit into to Backet)
After pushing to start button first the gauge came for 5 sec. after pushing it again it works permanent.

But get no beep. and can´t get in mpem check by pushing start 5 times?!?
Dan

Beepers are super flakey that's why I kept saying watch the gauges. So if the gauge comes on when you hit the start button then put the key on. That should make the gauge turn on and stay on for 30 seconds and you should be able to crank the motor. If the gauge doesn't come on with the key you most likely need a replacement dess post.

Now I get a short and long beep after pushing start 5 times.
I checked the dess post like decriped, but cant find any mistake?!?

I´m getting more and more confused!

The facts today:

After checking all grounds and wiring and start button and fess post I can´t find any mistake!

Then I got more and more disappoint, drunk some beer and forget to remove the 15amp fuse,........!
Two days later I was in the garage and want to check other things. I push the start button, the gauge came correctly and I got 2 short beep. I push the start button, starter turns over fast and I got same short sparks and engine stars for some seconds, then it was off.
I quickly get my timing light on and see that there are many missing sparks when I tried to restart.
At this time I was in hurry, remove the 15 amps fuse and been gone.

Two days later I want to check whats wrong with ignition, put in the 15 amps fuse and wondering that the system is dead like before. No gauge, no beep, nothing?!?!?
24h later System works like before, gauges, 2 short beep, starter turns, but no spark?!?

Is there anything in mpem which not allows you to operate after unfuse????
Do you have any idea why there are sparks missing, or no sparks?

Cheers Dan

getting better and better!!!!

push the start button and engine starts up! It runs for more than 1h?!?

Don´t know where to search

Update:

I changed Dess Post, Mpem, and Key but get no better results.
But I find an interesting new fact.
Key, gauges, engine, starter and sparks working fine when it is "warm", or when I do so.

A few days ago I have had the cover in the washing maschine. The Jet did not run on this day. After cleaning the cover I put it on the ski and put a hairdryer under the cover to dry it. 2 mins later I recognize two short beeps and everything was fine.
Today the same, in the morning it was quite cold and the ski was dead! I switched on the Hairdryer and two mins later I got the two beeps. Engine runs fine!
I switched of the hairdryer and been gone. 2 hours later it seems "the problem" cools dow, because the jet was dead again.
Hairdryer under the cover, 2 mins later two beeps,...... :-)

I know, this sounds idiotic

Where should I search?

Cheers Dan
