1997 Sea-Doo GTI screams, has no speed

Hey everybody, so i have a 1997 Sea-Doo GTI with a SBT Rebuilt Rotax 717 in it, I just got it from my cousin who just didn't use it anymore. Anyhow what it's doing is sometimes when i put it in the water it will start up fine but when i try to go any faster than i high idle it will scream and continue to move at the same speed. Sometimes I can coax it up to speed and once it gets going its fine as long as i don't try to whip it around too much. other times it will start up and run great for an hour or so then it will loose all its speed and do the aforementioned high idle and scream it i try to open the throttle up more than approximately 1/4 power. i would greatly appreciate any help or advice you can give me with this issue.

Are you taking on any water? Could be impeller, wear ring, or carbon seal.

These. Mine had similar symptoms and my wear ring was pretty much nonexistent. My carbon seal and impeller were fine. I replaced the wear ring and it's like I have a new ski.

If your wear ring looks like this, replace it.

New wear ring in.

I will agree, usually cavitation is caused by a worn wear ring. However in this case he says he as water leaking at the carbon seal so it's pointing to a worn carbon seal or since it's a new engine, misalignment of the engine to the pump. It also could be a combination of both.

Ahhh, I missed that post. Well, he'll get a good look at the wear ring if he has to replace the carbon seal.

well i just got to looking at it and the motor is loose. I talked to my cousin and he said its been like that. :o As to whether the engine was properly aligned he said he had no clue. I'm about to pull the propulsion system apart as we speak.

I can not stress the importance of engine alignment. We are talking under 10-thousands of an inch. If it is not aligned, you will normally loose impellers, wear rings, carbon seals, and premature drive shaft failure. If the ski were mine, I'd look at the wear ring and if it needs replaced, I'd buy a rind and all the stuff for the carbon seal, align the engine using the alignment tool and do it right. This will buy you years assuming you do not hit something or suck up a rock,,,

Ok,, LOL.. I just looked at your pictures...

You need it all. The side view of the carbon seal looks to be worn on an angle. If that is the case, it is toast. The item on the end of the shaft "looks" to be a rubber bumper that is simply crushed and wiped out. The boot is gone ect ect,, Just replace it all. But as noted above, you NEED the alignment tool to do this right.

Ok thanks Joe, and i looked at the alignment tool, yikes its expensive. Looks like it wont be hitting the water anymore this year. I also took the jet pump apart and there was barely any gear lube in it (none dripped out). I'm probably just gonna go ahead and replace the wear ring as well.

You also need to take a look at the motor mounts, any bad ones you'll need to replace, it's not going to do any good to align the motor if you have bad motor mounts. BTW Coastiejoe has an alignment tool he rents pretty much at cost.

Here is the link to the rental tool I have. I bought it for the use of fellow members. I have never used it myself and HOPE that I never will.. LOL. Basically, you spend money upfront, if you return it to me as you get it, you get back most of your money.

Ok thanks, I'll let you know about it when I get all the parts and check out the motor mounts. It appears the motor has come loose from the metal bracket I also found nuts bolts and washers and an Allen wrench rolling around in the hull

Sounds like a fantastic time to do it right. Take GOOD look at the mounts, shims, nuts, bolts that hold them all together, wear ring, carbon seal stuff ect ect. In the end, you will be a VERY happy man. I can promise you it will run better.
