1997 and 1999 XP: Trying to get them running.

I just bought 2 used skis, a 97 and a 99 XP. Both needed starters that I have since installed. Right now I am working on the 97. It is an 800 motor and had the grey fuel lines. I replaced the lines with fresh fuel hose and attempted to start it. It cranked and almost started but wouldn't turn over. I pulled off the carbs and am in the process of rebuilding them. Is there anything else I should look for as a common issue with these skis?
 
When I picked up the skis the compression was 135 on the first cylinder and the battery was dying as we tested the second cylinder so that only tested at 95.
 
Then you should get a new battery or get it charged first before further trouble shooting.

I bought new batteries for both. I didn't get a chance to pressure test either of them, but the 97 that I'm working on almost started but it seemed to be a fuel delivery issue. Can I test compression without the carbs on?
 
I am not the expert here who can guide you through step by step. But if you are rebuilding the carbs, then just finish it properly so that it is out of the equation.

Rebuild the carbs using OEM parts and do not change the pop off springs unless yours is damaged. Replace the fuel selector. Many just clean them but in many cases, there is an issue. Sucks air from the center shaft seal and the ports don't line up for some reason.

How much do the rebuild kits usually run? I found one that looks to be from Mikuni on ebay for $53 for both carbs. Does that sound about right?

No. I've never seen genuine Mikuni kits X2 for $53. If they really are then that is a steal! Post a link to the auction for us to see.

I hope you get a better compression reading on that "dying battery, 95psi cylinder."
 
There are a few things that nearly MUST be OEM on Seadoos. Starters, solenoids and carb kits. Aftermarket just don't cut it. With the carbs it mostly has to do with the diaphrams. They fit, they just respond differently.
 
So when those arrive I will be sending them back. Are the ones from SBT reliable and/or OEM? I didn't know about the OEM starters so I ordered 2 aftermarket ones from a powersports dealer locally. They seem to be working fine and came with a 2 year warranty. Is there any reason for the OEM preference other than reliability?
 
Also, sorry for the questions (first carb rebuild),the inner components of my carbs look pretty clean, do the passages on the inside that aren't visible become clogged? How can you tell if needle and seat need to be replaced?

Absolutely !!! You need to verify, 100% that they are all open and clear. I will use spray carb cleaner, and compressed air to dissolve, and blow out any junk.

Yep... non-OEM parts can cause issues. Generally the gaskets, and small Mylar parts are fine. But the aftermarket needle and seats are know to be machined to the wrong dimensions. (messing up fuel flow) And the aftermarket diaphragms are too stiff, and the bellows are too deep. In turn... they will put pressure on the needle, and they leak. SO... the engine will flood when you shut it down.
 
How can I tell if I should replace my needle and seat?

If the tip is still soft, and seals the seat... then it's fine. They actually work well for MUCH longer than people care to believe. Normally... I find that the O-ring that seals the seat gets hard, (or splits) and leaks there.
 
New starter is in and the 99 Limited is running!! Seems like it is idling fast, is this normal for these skis?
