First post here. Bought a real nice 1996 XP a couple weeks ago. Put new battery in it and completely cleaned the fuel system and put new fuel lines on it. Ran great with 160+ psi compression on both holes. Ran it around for a couple weeks until yesterday it ran rough for about 3 seconds and died. Tried to start and it was popping bad. Shut it off and swam it in. Came home and this is what I found on the PTO cylinder.

Any suggestions? Measured it up this AM and it looks to be standard bore.

Thanks for the forum.

Welcome to the forum. Are you going to rebuild it yourself?

You should figure out why it happened. What oil were you using? Did you go through the carbs and clean the internal filters? Were you checking your plug color frequently?

Yep... what he said.

#1 mistake a new seadoo owner does is to use the wrong oil. There is a sticker right by the fill cap saying "Syntetic Seadoo oil only." So...

1) Needs to be a synthetic oil
2) Needs to be a certified API-TC (low ash) oil

I'm not saying you are using the wrong oil... but most people go out and buy TC-w3 "Outboard" boat engine oil... and... well... they have an engine give up.

SeaDoo makes a ton of HP for the size of their engines. Most other companies need an extra 200cc's to get 110 hp.

I am rebuilding it myself. I really wish I did know the cause. Yes, I went through the carbs and cleaned the internal filters. I hadn't checked the plugs, but only had a couple hrs on it since I got it and put in new plugs.

I was running the oil that was in the tank when I got it. I know that was stupid. I had a brand new jug of Sea-Doo synthetic (yellow bottle) oil here for it.

There was oil in the intake right by the oil injectors, so I am almost ready to rule out the oil injection system. I don't think it got hot, no parts look like they got excessive heat and it was still wet around the cylinders.

Yes... the oil injection on a SeaDoo is very reliable, and unless you find a busted hose... or the filter is clogged up... you would be fine. I've never actually heard of a pump failing. Regardless... unless you know exactly what is in the tank... drain it before running the new engine.

From the pictures it's hard to say what happened. Almost looks like the ring grabbed the edge of a port, and tore the top lip of the piston off. (Then the parts just beat around)

By any chance is that by the exhaust port? The RAVE valve could have crashed into it.

I got everything tore down and most of it cleaned up in the spray washer. I pulled the liner out of the cylinder.

I think I will need:
-Liner
-Pistons/top end kit
-Gasket kit

How about SBT parts? Any good? They are only ~2hr away and have the parts I need. I hear their engines aren't the best.
