Just bought a 1996 xp and 96 spx for $150. Spx motor is toast so I am ebaying it out the xp has no dess key.. The air box was left off of it and the carbs exposed. I can make it turn over with jumpers to the starter and the oil I am spraying in the cylinders is coming back out very rust colored. Is it "worth" buying and having programmed a key... Just to see if I can make it run? An sell it. Trying to build $ to fix a seadoo challenger. Thanks :)

Dang that's a turd. You can get a compression reading without a key. Do that first to find out if the engine is toast or not

Won't the oil I sprayed into the holes give it an incorrect reading? How do I burn it off?

does it cost that much for key + program ? I just sent two up to tonka for re-key, but I got lucky, he just replaced the lanyards, since the key's were ugly but functional.

if it was me... i'd have the key programmed no matter what, you can sell the MPEM then, while waiting for it to be shipped back, you can clean up the hull and a little bit and decide if you want to save it.

however with that said,,, $1200-1400ish is the best you can get for a runner.

This is just my opinion, if you're going to fix it up to keep, yes, fix it up to sell no, you're gonna get upside down real quick. I don't blame you for buying the two ski's for $150.00 it's worth more than that for spare parts.

That is what the local place quoted me... Is there any cheaper route?

yes, I send mine to minnetonka, he's done'... I think 4 or 5 for me so far... so I (and several other members) can vouch for his services, honesty, and knowledge.

as I said, clean it up while the mpem is being shipped, see how well it cleans up, start with the hull, some pressure washing, some wet sanding in spots, see how it looks, when the 'puter coes back, see if you can get it to run, if it does, and you want to do a quick sale, then put some lipstick on the pig and post it on craigslist. (hull and hood will clean up surprisingly well with a few hours of work and the right combination of chemicals) we've covered that in a few threads but we can touch on it again.

otherwise, strip that puppy down, and sell of the spare parts that aren't needed for the challenger to get money for things that ARE needed for the challenger.

One of our members found one that looked just like that but had no title, I bought it dirt cheap, pulled the engine/computer/carbs, he put the top end on his broken down xp, I re-keyed the computer, sold it and the carbs, yanked the gauges, put the old engine together for a $150 core then sold the hull for $10. everybody was a winner.

you can easily yank $600=800 worth of parts out of that puppy (including stator/pump too) assuming the engine isn't totally shot, and the computer pulls a road runner. (beep beep)

it might seem like i'm promoting a part out, but i'm not, because if its just a matter of a cosmetic clean, a good key, drain the fuel tank and put some fresh gas in there, and you've got a $1200 ski on craigslist and you can take the first $900 offer you get and be happy. If you were going to keep it then you talking more effort, fuel lines, carb clean/rebuild, pump inspection/rebuild, etc...

I'd get a programmed key from Nick Minnetonka4me because as mentioned the MPEM (if working) is worth good money.

To answer your question should you fix it up to flip it - I guess I'd ask how much is your time worth? A power wash, wet sand, polish, new seat cover and general cleaning will work wonders for that thing but by the time you get the carbs cleaned, fuel lines changed and all the other general maintenance you will be deep in the hours category.

Not to sound like I'm comfortable flipping a turd with known issues, but to flip it, its not always necessary to do all the work discussed, assuming it runs and passes a short test ride. I'd have no issues selling a runner at a discount with a recommendation to the seller to do some general maintenance issues themselves. I mean in reality, how many times have members (I know I'm raising my hand) purchased a ski that started, but needed carbs/fuel lines, pump rebuild, had a bad cable, etc etc etc.... I suspect its more often than not that we purchase a ski that needs many if not all of those things.

IMO, if you do everything for the buyer, its a $12-1500 ish ski at best, if you do nothing more than have it start, and a good cleanup on the exterior, then its a $900ish ski that would probably still sell.

Thanks for the information! I just rolled the motor over to clear the cylinders of oil... Could get it to quite pumping at least a little oil out... Is that being injected? It seems to be. Did a compression check and back had 178psi and front 170psi. Isn't that a little high? As far as how much my time is worth... This is more like a labor of love, I really do enjoy making something that seems to be destined for the bone yard look and run well enough to turn heads once again :). .... Seems to be a time consuming weakness/habit of mine lol, and if I can turn a buck or two on it that would be awesome because unfortunatly none of these parts will fit on my challenger... It's got the merc. 240... Sitting in 3 boxes lol

What would be the best way to get an accurate reading? Spray some carb cleaner in to remove the oil? Or starting fluid?

I agree with everything you're saying but for me I like to have items I sell 100% running and ready to go. I've sold XPs both ways and unfortunately buyers are not willing to pay the extra money I think it's worth to have the ski completely gone through. I like seeing a cherry X4 saved and restored from a neglectful owner but for me it's not worth the time to go through one just to sell, I've basically quit buying them and am going to stick to the two I have.

Any one know if these stickers might be representing some performance parts I might have? I am not familiar with any of them..... Any guesses?

I don't see anything in the engine bay that would indicate performance parts installed :(

Got the mpem back from nick (thanks for the help!) and realized I had done something stupid, I yanked the mpem when it was night, thinking all the wires were color coded, and when I hooked em up for the 1st time today hoping for a beep beep I got..... Silence so I had a question for someone that has a 96 xp mpem to look at....

is this hooked right? It is a red bigger gauge wire on top and a little smaller pinker on bottom
