x-4 951 conversion or modded 800?

Looking for my next project, x-4 951 conversion or modded 800

HI guys,

I've been dreaming about doing a 951 conversion but after reading a few post i'm not sure anymore.
I know there is a huge amount of work involved and expensive and that they are not as reliable.

Now if i heavily mod a 800, would i be getting the same speed/power?
And once the 800 is modded, does this affect it reliability?

It's hard to say. The 951 isn't a long life engine... but a mod'ed 800 won't have great reliability either.

Overall... I think mod'ing an 800 will be the easier task, and you will have the same power when done.
 
As long as you arent getting fancy with the mods on the 800 your good. When you get into strokers and exotic cylinders is when it gets expensive.

Start with a pipe, head, air filters, rejet, and rev limiter (thats assuming a prop is already done) then maybe a set of carbs.

The 951 conversion isnt all that tough for guys that have the fiberglass experence. The 951 isnt known for reliability UNLESS its WELL taken care of...meaning zero water gets into the motor. Sounds easy but its not.

Exactly a decent mod 800 is plenty of power for a rec rider and 61-62 out of a limited 800 is easily achievable in a 96 xp. My spec 1 xp with a prop and nozzles goes 60.

Ok Cool, Thats what i was hoping. As you guys know, here in OZ these thing cost double so i'm happy to hear that. I'm not sure yet what i want to do. I'm still to get my fac pipe installed on my 717 xp, tunned and running. But i'm thinking of upgrading in the future. and ski's here are not easily available unless you pay a small fortune for them.

Any thoughts on a 1998 gsx? There been one for sale for ages, seller says it only needs a new crank, i'm thinking more like a total rebuilt! Says its got a 780cc engine. Does that have the x-4 XP hull? Looks bigger? Would that be a fun toy? I've got no clue about those things and this time before i buy another project, I'll take some advice from you experienced guys:)
 
Well I just rode my 951 XP for the first time this evening. I think I like the modded 787's better too. Some folks feel like "there is no replacement for displacement" but I enjoy the fine tuning of a high strung smaller engine. The 951 makes the X4 hull lean to the right when it's just floating there. The mid range pull of the 951 with the 155mm pump is very impressive though. The thing is a Boss!

matt hit it spot on, the biggest difference in the 951 is the mid range, its dammed impressive.... (and you can't complain about the hole shot either, but the mid range difference is definately noticeable)
 
Looks like a nice clean install Matt. I assume that one outlet is just blocked off?

Guy...the GSX must be a 96-97 if it has the 800. Its a good all around machine, stable for 2 up use, but small enough not to feel like a boat.
 
Yes the original outlet has the 951 water box pressed so tightly against it that it folds it shut. Then he left the hose on it tied behind the new one. Something is rattling the hull pretty bad but the po told me about that. I'm gonna try shimming a little rubber behind the water box.
 
Hey Matt did you purchase the ski like that or did you have someone custom build it for you??? If so how much ?
 
cool, anyone ever race a 800 against a 951 conversion?

Minne, Do you have any good GSX bits? are all the 800 parts, specially mod parts, a good crank etc?

Is it as fast as a 800 in a x-4 hull? I mainly want to get something faster than my 717 but kinda love my x-4 hull. But is hard to find a good deal here:( Thats why i'm asking about the gsx as thats what is available at the moment....
 
I saw the add and had Spim's positive reports of 951 X4's still fresh in my head. The guy then posts "$2000?" and got my attention. I took a poke and said "I'll give you two grand for it if you will bring it to Fl". Well careful what you wish for cause this guy was heading to see family in Fl over Christmas. We landed on $2100 and it came with a nice double trailer.

Guyph- there is nothing wrong with the GSX. If I had to carry a person with me it would be the right choice. For one persons ride though you just can't beat the X4. There is a powerful screaming little monster hiding in your 717 that the Factory pipe install will bring out. It's just a matter of getting it to last after that. I could overtake a stock 96XP every time with my old 95XP. I had a Factory pipe, 44mm Buckshot carbs, and a Solas XO prop. I ran it ten years and it still had 130/130 psi compression when I sold it. Plus I put stock parts on it for the sale and sold the pipe and carbs for $550 more on ebay!
 
hummm really???? Whats the difference between a 800 and a 717? is it quite consequent?

Any chance i can get my 717 with carbs, fac pipe etc to beat a stock 951 xpl? :)
 
No. That XPL should run in the low 60's stock. Your 717 has the potential to put you in the mid 50's range with the above mentioned parts.

There will be plenty of comments and perhaps video after the Jan. 19th ride. We can run the thing against different models that other people bring. I'm by myself out here.
 
Hi Guy,

I have both ski's a 95XP 800 and also a 96GSX, both have the same engine, and what Matt said is pretty much spot on. I've never raced the two but I think the GSX would probably beat the XP in a straight line race. Mine runs a couple mph faster than the XP however for "fun factor" the XP has it hands down.

However the 96GSX is a more practical ski, more stable and can carry two easily. If you can get a good deal on the GSX 800 buy it. And yes the 787 vs the 717 in a XP hull is a big difference, 25hp. difference.

Sorry man I dont really have anything fun for a GSX, but all the engine mods are exactly the same as a X-4. Really...the only things that would be different would be the intake grate, steering, and rev limiter.

My bro however has a bunch of aftermarket parts still; spec 2 pipe, some carbs...not sure what all he has squirreled away down in TX.

717=85hp, 787=110 hp. No rave vs. rave, no balancer vs balancer.
 
ok cool, I'll keep an eye out an hopefully i can get a good deal, on this gsx or anything else. I won't be needing any past right now, I really want to get the 717 back out and enjoy it a bit before selling it. The gsx will be a winter project:) Thx for all the input guys, very helpfull.

Anyone have any ideas about the polaris? Just got offered a 650 or 750 polaris that has lost spark for 500. Hummmm. any Thoughts????
Minne do you have any parts for those??? Hummm, thinking about Macgyver's Electrical issuers on his XPL, this could be a nightmare!!!

Yeah stay away. They are heavy and suck to work on. You couldnt pay me to take a beat up parts polaris. Well thats a lie, I'd take it and put it up on CL for $200 and sell it as one piece.
 
Lol, Well from that i'm a bit put off lol. I'll try and see if i can get the pice down. I got some tips and things to look for from a polaris guys on pwcToday. Might be good if i can fix it and make a small profit:) and get a good 800 x-4 after:D
