if you look at the end of the hose, you'll notice its actually 2 hoses, one inside another. In between those two layers is glue. The ethanol in our fuel breaks this glue down and the green slime/sludge is what it becomes.
Ethanol also has a strong affinity for water! That is why you had better treat your fuel (if you leave it in the tanks for winter) with a quality fuel treatment! After a season or two, that is why we get water in our tanks (in addition to normal condensation)
