i have a 96xp and as most know they don't have a tach what do you use for a tach since adapting a stock seadoo one isn't easy? I put new carbs on and obviously need a base rpm 3000 out of water and 1500 in water. what do you guys use and what do you suggest. i know some use a mini tach/hourmeter and saw others use a amazon.com tach.... i just want to do it right. IF drilling a hole for an oem tach is right them that fine but wiring with a resistor is needed if i read correctly. The less modifying i do the better unless OEM.

I have a Trail Tech, tachometer/hour meter on my GTI, installs easily, just wrap a wire around a spark plug wire. The only drawback is it's got a 5 year non replaceable battery. Costs about 30-35 dollars.

I heard those are not very accurate though? Like they only update every two seconds compared to the stock seadoo tachs that updates twice a sec or so? I'm also trying to install a tach on my 96 XP without spending a fortune.

edit - I ended up buying one and it is pretty accurate.

The trail tech is as good as any of the cheap ones.

The only real option is a PET2100 but they are over $200.

Stock seadoo tachs will work but good luck finding one with a good orange needle. Even then its impossible to see a 50rpm difference on those.

Not following you...the SPX has small gauges vs. the RX that uses the big ones. I have a few of those if you are interested. I have almost installed a big one next to my DESS post. Those are big enough to read...

i also use the trail tech

note: its smaller than this pic !!!

its ok, does the job, but its very small and hard to read, but i keeps my hours, and max rpm... half the time i'm not sure what my rpm is at a glance anyway cuz the dam water injection pulses, so its bouncing up/down.

have a buddy with the good old tiny tach, probably a better unit overall but imo its ugly. :) i chose the tto due to small size.

its also small enough to do a handlebar mount... (i have a pic of that somewhere, just can't find it right now)

edit... after a 10 minute search,, found the dam pic...
handlebar mount of tto tach on a 96 xp, this is on a buddy's ski, mine is next to the dess post.

I don't need a tach to run WOT ;)

nahh, both my ski's have them stock...

I like to make sure I can push 7,150 ish wide open.

Is the TTO waterproof/resistant? I thought about putting a stock one up on the 3 panel on my 96xp and moving the infocenter down by the DESS like the 95xp800 just need to drill a hole in the fiberglass, very stock looking i'd think. TTO might be easier route for now though as long as water doesnt' affect its performance. I'd rather not have to screw it in maybe 5lb double sided tape would be best.

i'm going to go with water "resistant" but mine has been soaked ! i mean really still going strong

but I don't think that they claim water PROOF.
besides, your talking under $40 shipped, if it breaks you throw it away !

Trail tach ordered, thanks, although still thinking of puting a oem seadoo tach on it in the future. I like the single gauge hood but don't like the idea of only having two gauges. For tuning and top speed digital will be nice.
