I'm replacing the wear ring in my 1996 Sea Doo SPI (part#271000290) by the service manual instructions. Once I got ready to install the new ring I realized it would not fit. The I.D. of the pump housing is 5 5/8" and the O.D. of the wear ring is 6 1/4".......WHAT THE CRAP!?!? Can anyone tell me another part # that may fit this ski or give some suggestions? :banghead:

Wear Ring

Hi,

I replaced my wear ring about a month ago. I have a 96GTI, 720 motor.

My wear ring is part no. 271-000-290, the same part no. as yours, so the one you have should fit.

There is one thing you might want to check, because I made a mistake when I took out the old wear ring. I took out all of the black material, but left the fiberglas ring in the pump. Be sure to remove the fiberglas ring, the inside of the pump should be all black plastic. Outer fiberglass as I remember is about 3" wide, it comes probably about 3/4" from the top of the pump.

If thats not the case I would contact the supplier because the part is either mismarked or the wrong part.

Good Luck

Lou

:blush:My wife told me what I was doing wrong! I made the same mistake LouStrau. I chipped all of the black plastic out and thought the fiberglass was part of the housing. Thanks anyway guys! I've got it all back together now heading to the river.

OK...just got back from the river and the ski jumps out of hole the first few times. The more that I stopped and started the harder it was to get on plane. Sometimes were worse than others and it seemed that if the ski sat for a few minutes then it would take off better. It took off one time (barely) with me and my wife on it then we stopped and it never would get up again. Although I'm having this problem, it still runs twice as good as it did before the wear ring. Also, I noticed a rattle in the rear in that I didn't have before the wear ring replacement. I checked the play in the shaft after installing the impellar and it seemed to be no more than 1 mm. Should I take it back apart a check everything for the rattle and what other things play a part in the cavitation? I looked in the jet with a flashlight and the ring looks perfect. The impellar has some dings in it but nothing huge. I appreciate the feedback!!

Gray Fuel Lines

Have you changed the gray fuel lines, cleaned or replaced gas filters, replaced fuel selector valve? If not you probably should.

Carbon Ring

Hi,

It could be the carbon ring. It works sorta like a clutch, and its in the drive line. I have never had to change one, you would probably have to pull the pump back off.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Lou

I checked the splines on the shaft and impellar when I had it apart and they looked good.

On the carbon ring, if that thing works like a clutch then that would explain it being worse while its hot....maybe?! Can I see it if I pull the boot back on the inside of the hull and how can I tell if its bad?

The rubber bumper pad that should be one both ends of the shaft, also there is some pumps that can take a spring thing inside the cover, you did change the pump oil while in there right?

I'll check that bumper. I've seen the cones with the spring in them, but my ? is why does it rattle now? I put 75/90 synthetic gear oil in it and I'm pretty sure I got 3 full ounces in there. What do you think about the carbon ring and cavitation, Voodoo?
