Water rusting up my starters

I have had to replace two starters in the past two years and cannot for the life of me figure out where the water is coming in at to get to the starter. If anyone can help me, i sure would appreciate it. Thank you.
 
Rusty starter.

Mate.In the salt water everything rusts.What i have done for many years is to paint a heavy duty grease on EVERYTHING.I have just totally rebuilt a 98 GTX LTD from the bum up.Thanks to the suppurt and brains of the guys from this site.I bought the ski I have,with a brand new starter on it.I saw it.6 months later it was rusty.My fault.When I did the rebuild,everything was painted in a lanolin grease.(sheep grease)It is not conductive and pretty much non everything.The U.S and Aust navy now use it.They have a brand name but I don't wish to promote.BUT it IS made from sheeps wool.Lanotec.Lanox.oopsIt really is starting to take off.Fishing trawlers have used it for years.(stinks like a sheep shearing shed)
Warm the grease up and paint it on
 
after a ride... how much water is in your ski? also, are you in salt?

Finally, that old ski looks nice. post a bigger pic. :cheers:
 
Rusty starter

Not much in the hull at all. Im riding in fresh water only, no salt. After every ride, and ready to leave, I start it to get the water out of the motor then kill it. Not knowing that water is collecting in my starter housing over time, its getting to my starter housing and rusting the starter. It sounds like to me that i may have a seal , o-ring, or gasket that is messed up and when water runs through my motor, the water finds a hole and flows past the seal, o-ring or gasket and gets to the starter housing.

Where are you buying your starters? There are some starters that people are selling that are real crap. Do not buy a $50.00 starter from EBay, I bought one, it wouldn't even work right out of the box.

There is no connection from the water jackets in the engine, and the starter. So... there is no way that is happening. Now... the starter is on the bottom of the engine, and even a couple inches of water will submerge the starter. If you buy a new starter... before the install... take it apart, and make sure all the seals are good, and assemble it with a little RTV.

I have bought one in the past from ebay and learned my lesson. The newest starter I bought, i had ordered from MES (Marine Electric Suppliers, Inc,) a $142.00 starter.

The rust was on the bendix itself and on the front of the cylinder of the starter. I took it apart, cleaned all the rust off of it and re assembled it. It works great now. I just need to find out how the water is getting to the bendix.
 
Check your bailer hoses where they are highest at the back of the hull. A minor crack from the 'in' could be spraying water like a squirt gun in such a way that it is accumulating somehow at bendix. The other 'good' bailer is then working properly and emptying your hull so you never really see any accumulation of 'inches' of water... good luck
 
Hey Greyrider, now that you mention it, I do have a weak stream on one side of my hoses. cant remember which side so I might want to replace both? Took a quick look and didnt see any cracks in the tubing that I know of but will replace them as soon as I can. What type of hose is that used for the bailer hoses?
 
if the bailer tubes are not hooked up, at the pump (on top) / missing tubes inside the pump assy, then, the bailer system will work in a reverse effect, causing them to syphon water INTO the hull.

Made sure the o-ring was with the starter? Aint those starters a PITA to get to/install....:willy_nilly:

Fun! just did one. Nothing beats LOTS of extensions taped together...
 
I checked the hoses and a do not see a crack in them. If I checked the right ones. The highest hoses that connect to the black plastic parts with alot of holes in the bottom side (have no idea what the name of it is) that suck up the water are the ones I checked.
